Struggling to keep motivation and attention at a reasonable level, on this gray drizzly Friday afternoon...

So I was wondering:

1 - What to you love most in your life as translator?

2- And what do you hate most?

(Name one - ok, you are allowed two for each question)

Liking and disliking Mar 24, 2006

It feels great when my efforts bear fruits, I mean when my translation is appreciated by the agency or client.

I hate to edit/proofread a bad translation.

cats Mar 24, 2006

Love: stroking my cat's belly while I work (he's on his back with his legs open beside me on the desk as I speak... the little slapper!)

Hate: No grievances strong enough to be called a "hate", although I miss having colleagues. I think it's one of the reasons Proz is so popular - so few of us have "real life" colleagues, we need to come in here to find virtual ones!.

Love/hate Mar 24, 2006

When I get to work with gifted copywriters who produce stimulating material for me to work with and who in turn appreciate my work - I could do it for free!

Annual reports. I hate, loathe, detest, abhore annual reports. Not the first half, that's interesting - it's the tedious,
dull, who-cares-and-no-one-is-gonna-read-it-anyway financials that get me - coupled with the fact that businesses are notoriously late and expect a one-week turnaround. Can't get paid enough for these monsters.

Thanks for letting me get that off my chest. Now, back to my tedious financials....

Gloriously sunny, spring greetings from a snow-and-ice covered Stockholm.

I just love the feeling of triumph when I finally find a solution to some translation problem. Another thing that always makes my day is messages from happy clients/outsourcersicon_smile.gif

I'm still a newbie (but a promising one too!) and my workflow is not quite steady yet. I hate it when I get no jobs for a couple of days, and then suddenly everybody decides to call me at the same time and I have to turn down offersicon_frown.gif

Words, schedule, CATs, clients Mar 24, 2006

Love: finding the right word; being able to establish my own schedule.
Hate: To have to learn user-unfriendly CAT tools; clients that do not pay in time.

Lost (the) translation... Mar 24, 2006

I love: waking up in the middle of the night with the perfect translation inside my head...

I hate: not having a pen and a piece of paper around...

Love/Hate Mar 24, 2006

Love: when I am done with proofreading.
Hate: (you guess it...) proofreading. If anybody ever comes out with a good proofreading tool, I'm gonna have it, don't care about the cost.
Dull and grey here as well. I think I am going to bed early... ciao Rob

Love/hate Mar 24, 2006

Love: being my own boss and the fact that working from home I can spend more time with my kid.
Hate: the other side of the coin, virtual colleagues is one thing but sometimes I miss real ones.

Typical Mar 24, 2006

starting the day with a nice schedule in my mind, well planned with deadlines and activities properly set throughout the day, connecting to Proz and seeing Roberta's radiant picture.

1/2 hour later, doing 20 things at the same time, already feeling knackered, 20 buttons on my taskbar, stressed out replying to emails, ending the day at 9pm with 2 job deadlines missed by 20 min, no walk outside and no half-hour playing with the kids as planned. And lunch and dinner swallowed in 10 minutes. Roberta? Who's Roberta?

Life as a translator Mar 24, 2006

Love: the process of creating a translation – being sort of a writer, I see translation as the runner-up of my profession choice, as it involves both creativity and expertise.

Do not love (I don't like the word 'hate'): would you believe me if I said that there's nothing I really don't love in working as a translator?

Oh, well... I guess it's one of those happy Fridays for me today, when I have no resentmentsicon_smile.gif
