Today while talking to a collegue (teacher) I was told that people consider me addited to Internet.
Am I? Now when I come to think of it, I may be.
I check mail several times a day (for the business purposes) and when I have nothing to do I visit a chat room (same one for 4 years).

Not to internet in general - but somewhat addicted to KudoZ Oct 11, 2006

When I have nothing to do, I browse Kudoz to see if I can crack a question or two. That's probably the only thing I do online that I wish I did less. Like yourself, I check my email maybe ten times a day, but don't consider that an addiction as it is mainly for work.

To an extent Oct 11, 2006

I dont think I am addicted to the internet in the sense that I can go without it if I'm on vacation or at a cottage or something. However, I have to admit that I am on the Internet all the time and not only for business purposes. When I get home from my 9 to 5, the first thing I do is turn on the computer and go on the internet, see who is online, etc. Most people turn on the t.v., I turn on the computer.

For sure and proud of it :D Oct 11, 2006

Even before I started working as a translator I have been known to spend several hours a day staring at my screen. Checking for mail (personal, professional and education related), playing an online strategy game, spending time in one of the first online communities in the Netherlands...

One could say I'm an internet junkie... even now I'm checking mail every hour on the hour (not that anything useful comes in, but still... one never knows what will happen).

Shouldn't there be a poll on this?

Mon-Fri addiction Oct 11, 2006

I think I'm kind of severely addicted from Monday to Friday.

I do use the Internet a lot for work and leisure etc. but I enjoy the weekend break, when the computer is miles and miles away from me.

But on Monday morning I also enjoy so much turning on the PC and go online, it's a subtle pleasure like the first coffee and cigarette in the morning.

without internet nothing ever functions with me Oct 12, 2006

HI! I read mails every few hours, do online research, download music, watch movies. Lately I have connected a dolby surround home entertainment to my network with 8 boxes, along with a screen projection panel, and can watch movies as though in a movie hall. When I get bored, I just take the bike and take a long ride. Best Brandis

Not Addicted Oct 12, 2006

Hi,

Well, for me Internet is just a tool that I use for my work and to stay in contact with people. But I can live without it and I really don't have any withdrawal symptoms if I don't use Internet for a couple of days. Except may be a bit of monetary loss at times (just a side-effect of not staying in touch with people )

Have a nice day.

Regards,

Ritu Bhanot

I just the other day wondered how little I use the internet Oct 12, 2006

When computers were so much worse than today and the internet did not exist (1980s) I spent all my spare time in front of the machine. Now when I have an excellent machine, broadband and all the software I hardly use it for other purposes than work, googling and solitaire.
Perhaps I'm too old, but chatting has never attracted me.
Regards
Heinrich

I don't think so... Oct 12, 2006

I use internet a lot, spend quite some time at my computer, but internet is a way to communicate with my friends, who are far away, to check some information, to read a review of a movie I plan to see in a cinema, etc.

And of course great source of info regarding my business.

So, am I addicted, or do I only use it often and a lot, because it is useful thing?

Anni

Forum participation poll Oct 12, 2006

I believe last week there was a poll about forum participation ( http://www.proz.com/topic/56592?start=15&float= ), a little bit related, and in which, incidentally, though I posted rather late my opinion, I also mentioned the idea of Internet/forum addiction (including a link to information about Internet addiction).

Although I am no psychologist, I believe potential addiction to the Internet is fact, not fiction. I don't think it is something to be taken litely, especially when you work as a freelancer (thus spending a lot of time using the Internet).

Even if you use the Internet just for "normal" purposes (for example, as a work tool or to communicate with family/friends or, like here, with colleagues), because of all the other different contents/links it offers simultaneously (for example, "casino" or "betting" sites), a person with a personality with a higher tendency to addiction could easily get "hooked" to things that are not necessarily positive and, furthermore, end up dedicating more time using the Internet than, for example, being with the family or just enjoying a sunny day outdoors.

Of course, like I commented in the above mentioned poll message, anything can be addictive, but I really think the Internet offers a higher potential for addiction than other media, because it is a combination of various media (thus, multiple activities).

And also of course, I think that even if we all might end up "suffering" from a little bit of Internet addiction, as long as you are aware of it, you can always exert a "positive" control of it.

Regards,

Ivette
