I have an English installation of Windows XP and Office XP but I set the default OS and Word languages to French. This used to work fine but recently it has stopped allowing me to spellcheck in French.

I set the default language to French in Word and I then run the spell checker but it defaults to English(US), if I go into the language options again it has reset itself to English(US).

I have tried deleting the normal template file but it does nothing.

Any suggestions?

"Detect language automatically" Apr 4, 2008

I have Office 2007, so I'm not sure where this option in Office XP, but try looking for something called "Detect language automatically" when you open the language selection box. I have it right under the box with the list of languages, and it's one of those tick/untick options.
I too went mad for some time when I kept selecting Italian and Word kept reverting to English!
Hope this helps,
L

Detect Language automatically OFF? Apr 4, 2008

"Country settings" in Windows have nothing to do with language as such, AFAIK. They just set currency, decimal point styles etc.

Check if the language detect option is on.

Try editing the default style Apr 4, 2008

and set the language for it.

Or use OpenOffice.org — much less trouble with spellcheck.

Format -> Styles and formatting (or whatever in your language) Apr 4, 2008

and you'll see a side panel listing your styles. Find Normal, or Default, or, again, whatever in your language, right-click on that entry, choose Modify, and you'll see a dialog. In the bottom left corner, find Format button, click and choose Language from the drop-down list.
