Right now, I'm merely copying the source-language comment (including tags) from the source to the target document, and then typing the translation of the tagged words in between the tags.

This complicated procedure is required in order to preserve the original comment metadata.

Does anyone have any improvements to this procedure to make it somewhat less time-consuming?

Yes, that's what I'm doing...but the problems are 1) making sure the tags appear in the right place in the translation, and 2) making sure all the metadata also gets copied properly.
