Images resize in Word 2003 after editing their text

I have some images in a Word 2003 document in which text requires translation. I can access the text by double-clicking on the image. This opens a separate window in which the text can be edited.
However, when I close that window the document shows only a segment of the image, magnified several times. This can be adjusted by fiddling manually with the dimensions of the image during editing, but I'm sure that can't be the proper solution.
I have tried saving, closing, reopening, saving in RTF and opening in Word 2007, none of which has helped.
Thanks for your suggestions... there are a lot of images like this in my document...!!
