Dear colleagues,

I have noticed that when I analyze files with Trados, I get fewer characters than when I look up the statistics for the same file in MS Word. Could anyone offer an explanation as to why this is the case? Is it feasible to make Trados count the same number of characters as MS Word does?

Thank you in advance!

Microsoft Word assumes that everything between spaces is a word. This means that it will count numbers and symbols. Translation tools on the other hand, will not include these characters when generating a word count, since it's assumed that they don't actually require translation.

As far as I know, there's nothing you can do about it.

BTW, vice versa is also possible Feb 16, 2010

Word does not count chars in frames and text-boxes, so it may show smaller values.

Thank you. Feb 16, 2010

Thank you everyone. I ended up opening each of the 28 files I had with MS Word and using those stats to draw up an invoice for my customer...

Footnotes & endnotescount Feb 17, 2010

In case files include footnotes & endnotes then you have to check the (footnotes & endnotes) checkbox in MS Word count window.

Further, there are other word count software where you can turn on/off digits before counting. I think Practicount is one of them.
