This relates both to Trados (Studio SP3) and Word (2010).

I recently upgraded to MS Office Word 2010. This has the somewhat annoying behaviour of opening a new instance of itself if I already have a Word file open and then open another file from outside Word - eg in an email attachment or from Windows Explorer.

Firstly, is there any option to change this so that new files just open in a new document?

It's also a problem because with the Trados add-in enabled in Word, I can't open new documents at all outside of Word: I get an error 'word cannot save this file because it is already open elsewhere', which refers to the Trados8.dotm template which Word obviously tries to open again. Then when I click OK I get a run-time error and the file fails to open.

Has anyone else had this problem? And is it fixable?
(Obviously files such as email attachments can be opened by saving them to a convenient folder first and then opening them from Word, but this wastes so many seconds!)

Thanks

Try moving TRADOS8.dotm file from Word Startup folder to Templates folder. Aug 22, 2011

I just fixed this problem by moving my TRADOS8.dotm file from:

C:\Users\Michael J.W. Beijer\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP

to:

C:\Users\Michael J.W. Beijer\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates

That is, from my Word Startup folder to my Templates folder.
