MS Word count with hidden text

I have a question for the MS Word experts out there. I completed a large job more than a month ago and now the client is submitting "missing" text. This text turns out to be hidden text (that neither of us knew about) revealed by pressing Ctrl +A and then the code Shift +F.

Fine, being that the invoice had already been submitted and priced according to word count, the customer assures me that MS word has already counted this hidden text and I don't have to submit a subsequent invoice.

I just want to check if this is correct, because he didn't sound all that certain himself.

TIA,
sylvie

I don't think so... Jul 23, 2004

Hi Sylvie,
I just did a quick test with MS Word 10 (XP): hidden text was not counted.

Actually, it's simple to test it yourself:

Type the following text:
This text has five words.

5 words, 21 characters excluding / 26 characters including spaces, right?

Copy and past the sentence, then highlight one of the two sentences and turn it into hidden text (Ctrl-Alt-H).

Now count again.
Bingo.

Best regards, Ralf

I was afraid of that. But on the other hand, the translated text has more copy.
I will be submitting a subsequent invoice.

Hi Sylvie,

A simple test you can tell your client to do is to select ALL the document and mark it as hidden (or leave the first 2 words visible only). Then make a wordcount.
They will immediately realise that hidden text is not counted by Word and that once you translate what was missing and mark it as visible text, you have to resubmit your invoice with the correct and total wordcount.

HTH,
Grace.

text boxes and drawings too Jul 24, 2004

Text in text boxes, headers and footers, and editable text in drawings or pictures is not counted either.

You could try the tool available from this website: http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/CompleteWordCount/ I like it.

...a lot Bruce. I used to count text boxes, headers, footers and text in images manually. icon_frown.gif
