MS Word, Office 2000, Hyperlink problems

Before a recent update to Windows XP, I was able to type a URL in a Word document and then click on it to open the relevant web page.
I now get a dialogue box reading "Unable to open http://www.xxxxxxxxxxx/. Cannot locate the Internet server or proxy server".
