I know it's been asked before but I can't find it in forum search: How do I search a carriage (hard) return and replace it with a space in a Word document?

much appreciate it,
sylvie

Depends on what you mean by hard return Jan 31, 2006

but either ^l or ^p should do the trick.

Thanks Stephan for such a speedy answer. Jan 31, 2006

[I mean a hard return as opposed to a soft return (shift + return). Am I dating myself?]

Now, do you know the space symbol so that I can replace it with that?
There must be a website for these. Do you know an address? Or where did you get the nifty " ^p " from?

TIA,
sylvie

find and replace dialogue box Jan 31, 2006

In the standard Find and Replace dialogue box of Word, extend the box so that the lower part opens as well.
Press the middle botton below to open a list of special characters. The paragraph mark ("hard return") is the first one. Click on it. The special character will be inserted in the "Find" field. To replace this character with a space, simply type a space in the "Replace with" field.
Then proceed with "Replace all" or finding them individually, as you like.

No symbol needed for space Jan 31, 2006

Just type a space into the Find/Replace box.

The exception: a non-breaking space, which I think is a ^s.

One other thing: these codes ARE case sensitive, so it's ^p, not ^P.
