Folks,

I am editing a document in Word 2000 that has about a million footnotes. Every time, the author has put the full stop (the period) after the footnote reference number in the text.

In every case, I have to put the footnote reference number after the full stop.

I cannot seem to do this with Search and Replace. I open up the whole S & R dialogue and insert ‘^f.’ in the Search line, using the Special button. But when the cursor is in the Replace line, the Special button does not give me the ‘footnote mark’ option. So I cannot insert ‘.^f’

If I simply paste the ^f symbol from the Search line into the Replace line, and press the Replace button, I get a message that ‘^f is not a valid special character for the Replace With box’.

Is there any way to do this without manually changing about a million footnotes?

Many thanks,
JB

IMO you could do it with a macro Feb 27, 2006

...but I'm hopeless at coding macros. With a bit of luck, someone with a digital thumb (so to speak) will come to your aid.

The logic of the macro would be:

find the combination ^f.
delete the full stop
go back one character position
insert a full stop
repeat the above steps until ^f. is no longer found

Here's a macro I recorded and tried. Works nicely here.
================================
Sub FootnoteMacro()

' this portion finds the footnote

Selection.Find.ClearFormatting
With Selection.Find
.Text = "^f."
.Replacement.Text = ""
.Forward = True
.Wrap = wdFindContinue
.Format = False
.MatchCase = False
.MatchWholeWord = False
.MatchWildcards = False
.MatchSoundsLike = False
.MatchAllWordForms = False
End With

' this portion swaps the period and the footnote

Selection.Find.Execute
Selection.MoveRight Unit:=wdCharacter, Count:=1
Selection.MoveLeft Unit:=wdCharacter, Count:=1, Extend:=wdExtend
Selection.Cut
Selection.MoveLeft Unit:=wdCharacter, Count:=1
Selection.Paste

End Sub
==============================
Put it into your Word, assign a hotkey to it and you're done.

A little addition to process all footnotes in a bunch Feb 27, 2006

A little addition to Aleksandr's macro to replace all footnotes in the document (his version was intended to find and replace only the next footnote after the current position).

==========================================
Sub FootnoteMacro()

' this portion finds the footnote

Selection.Find.ClearFormatting
With Selection.Find
.Text = "^f."
.Replacement.Text = ""
.Forward = True
.Wrap = wdFindContinue
.Format = False
.MatchCase = False
.MatchWholeWord = False
.MatchWildcards = False
.MatchSoundsLike = False
.MatchAllWordForms = False
End With

' this portion swaps the period and the footnote

Do While Selection.Find.Execute
Selection.MoveRight Unit:=wdCharacter, Count:=1
Selection.MoveLeft Unit:=wdCharacter, Count:=1, Extend:=wdExtend
Selection.Cut
Selection.MoveLeft Unit:=wdCharacter, Count:=1
Selection.Paste
Loop
End Sub
