Recently, my MS Word XP stopped offering proposed changes in the course of spell-checking. May be, I switched off some setting? Could you please help me with that?

Probably just a setting

Sometimes, for various (and usually unknown to the average user) reasons, settings within Microsoft products become "un-set". I suggest you go back into where you set the spellcheck options (Tools, Options, Spelling and Grammar) and make sure that the appropriate option(s) are checked.
Good luck!

Levan, the Tools > Options> Spellchecking/Grammar > Always suggest corrections should be checked (and you should also check which dictionaries do you want to use, the dictionaties are shown in the same tab).
P.S. FYI, I moved the thread to Office applications forum.
