"None" vs "0 - 4" May 8, 2008

"0 to 4" should be changed to "1 to 4"

Disagree May 8, 2008

I think 0 to 4 is ok like it is.

If I answer none it means that I never contact any agencies.

By answering 0 - 4, it simply means that I may or might not contact a few agencies per month, but that I do contact some from time to time (as opposed to none).

Same here. Year to year, I keep thinking "It's probably time to update "About me" section of my ProZ profile", but even that is not a priority...

Same as Marie-Hélène Hayles May 8, 2008

More clients/agencies contact ME than I have time for I have the luxury of picking and choosing the jobs I want to accept, but I've been in the business for a l-o-n-g time.

When approached by someone promising, I explain that I'm not looking to expand my client base at the moment - I mean, why fix what ain't broken, right? - but will keep their details on record in case things slack off, and ask them to enquire again themselves in a month or two.

I quote a higher rate than what I am generally quoting at the time, at my standard payment terms of 30 days or less, and leave the ball in their court. Those that respond positively and do come back, normally get a 'foot in the door' and I test the waters.

This careful approach has led to me to set up at least three very profitable relationships in the last year, one of whom have actually made it into my 'inner circle' of clients. It helps sort out the wheat from the chaff and continually helps me raise my rates.

I keep a list of promising leads in my field of direct clients and specialised agencies - made up from various sources - and so, if needed, I have a targeted marketing plan ready to put into action. Touch wood, it's never been necessary.

Same here... However, sometimes we do try to get in touch with direct customers in our main areas of expertise.

I have a large Database of over quarter million potential customers, so whenever I have free time I generate a flyer and contact as many possible in the idle time. It is about communication. Best regards, Brandis

Does responding to ProZ jobs count? May 9, 2008

I said "0-4" because I receive notification of jobs via ProZ from agencies I don't know, and sometimes I respond. That's what I understood the question to mean.

I don't have the time to contact agencies either. Mostly I have to say sorry, I'm booked, because new agencies often have such short deadlines for whatever reasons.

I did actually consider it a while back - because working with agencies does occasionally mean you run round in circles with regular end clients. I did actually consider it a while back - because working with agencies does occasionally mean you run round in circles with regular end clients. As long as everyone is happy, that 's great, but you do have to make sure you get enough work in what you want to specialise in, and don't just fill the gaps for the agency because you can do anything they offer you.

I was getting a lot of marketing and tourism and practically nothing else. I have to keep my hand in on the other specialities somehow, and breaks help to keep my marketing style fresh. When you think all the cafés and restaurants sound the same, and you are getting 'saddle sore' from describing yet another fantastic cycling route with glorious views... it's time to do something else!

But there are agencies, and then there are good agencies. My favourite clients seem to have a different mix again, or they are sending me more of the work I try to specialise in.
It might have been an idea to contact the ones I already knew, just to remind them!
So that is what I will do another time.

This past Monday was slow, so I did finally start to update my CV and pick a few agencies to send it to and then things picked up again and I haven't had a breather since.

I wish I could learn to enjoy the few slow days that come my way!
