They may be unrelated topics, but they are quite interesting. You simply can't resist the temptation to surf the web now and then.
Another reason: to relieve the boredom of translation task. When we are translating and typing fast and furious, we have no other option but to surf the web. Or we could have a telephone conversation with a friend instead.
But inhouse translators won't be doing this for obvious reasons.

I agree with the observation that pretty much any web site is "on topic" for a translator.
Originally I was going to say "anything short of porn," but then I remembered that I once met someone whose regular projects included writing dubbing scripts for English-Spanish translations of porn videos...
What a fascinating and diverse profession we're in!

I used to, but had to stop it for sanity's sake!
Of course, I google out terminology and keep the Kudoz Glossary open while I translate. But I no longer surf the web for entertainment (sudoku, news reading, etc.) until my current job is done.
Translating requires concentration and discipline, and opening a window to the world is an addiction I definitely cannot afford these days.
So I'm here now and this is it! After completing a 4K+ into-Spanish assignment... See more I used to, but had to stop it for sanity's sake!

Reading the local newspaper is something I can`t avoid doing. I need to know what’s going on around me, outside my home office. Nonetheless when I have a lot of work I try to focus only on that... Apart from the newspapers, I waste a lot of time when I have to translate about a topic that interests me a lot, like pathologies, for instance. I spend a lot of time reading background information. Well, I think this is inherent to us, that’s why we are translators!
