I do an exercise with a small machine called "Chi-vitalizer". I used to walk up to one hour daily, but I realized it is not compatible with my work schedule. This machine claims 15 minutes of exercise is equal to 10,000 steps of walking. I have no way of verifying the validity of the claim, but it certainly feel that's what I did after the 15 minuites. Think how long it takes for you to walk 10,000 steps! | | | Amy Duncan (X) Brazil Local time: 00:53 Portuguese to English + ... You don't have to give up things you like | Aug 28, 2008 |
kero wrote: I think you are right and I also eat too quickly. I tend to eat too much junk food (pizza, ice-creams, cakes, doughnuts, chocolate bars ...!) even if I don't need it. I just say: "Oh, I need a tea ... and it tastes much better with a chocolate bar together with it". I will try the youtube exercises, though I bet I'll look ridiculous (at least they fit my timetable). A few months ago I started a diet (2 weeks) and I eliminated all the carbohidrates and had only meat and vegetables. I must say I quickly lost weight, but I felt kind of weird and I had to interrupt it. However, I was the slimmest participant in the latest powwow I attended, therefore I think that this is a common problem for us all (there were plenty of participants). In my experience, kero, you don't have to give up things you like to eat or only eat certain things. If you try to do that you'll just end up eating more of everythings. Diets don't work, period. The weight comes off and then it goes back on. The real deal is to stop eating when you're not hungry. I know this is a little off the main thread because it's not about physical activities, but the two seem to go hand-in-hand. Nobody could look sillier than me doing Tae Bo (I'm a senior citizen, as they say), so go for it! Amy | | | Andrea Riffo Chile Local time: 23:53 English to Spanish + ... I am (mildly) embarassed to say I am pretty much a couch-potato, due to lack of time, an excercise-unfriendly environment (awfull pollution) and other reasons way beyond my control | | | ikeda45 Local time: 12:53 Member (2007) English to Japanese Horse Riding | Aug 28, 2008 |
I'm just a beginner. But last time I rode for only 20 mininuts , I could reduce 800g in weight! Besides, horses are cool and pretty.

90 minutes daily: gym, bicycle, walking, playing with a soccer or basket ball, or running ...but 90 minutes. Some swimming at weekends. | | | Miet Ooms Belgium Local time: 05:53 German to Dutch + ...
Just started with it yesterday, after saying for two years that I should start with it. I was member of a swimming club during my childhood, but stopped with it when I started at the university. Since then no regular sporting anymore, and no condition. Now, fifteen years later, it is time to pick it up again. | | | Susan McDonald France Local time: 05:53 Member (2006) French to English + ... My husband and I perform and teach, sometimes five or six hours a day if we are working in schools ... this keeps us pretty fit! Although over the summer months, there's not so much teaching with the schools on holiday, so the pounds do start to pile on. We've taken to doing three sessions a week at the local gym (cardio and light weights), and we are now getting a bit addicted... In case you're wondering how I fit the translation part into this - I'm an early riser who doesn't need much sleep, and so can do early mornings for several hours and late nights! I find that both the exercise and the translating keep my brain sharp - at the moment, anyway, it seems to be a symbiotic relationship. Also, this kind of dancing is really sociable - lots of great events where you can dance and not realise that you're keeping fit at the same time. I can definitely recommend it! ▲ Collapse

I'm with the "martial arts club", although I'm only really interested in judo - a true passion which has lasted 25 or more years now... love jogging, too, but past injuries made me cross that out of the agenda. I wish I had more time to dedicate to sports... not just to keep fit - I prefer games and competitions; I'm with those who said they need a target of some sort. ▲ Collapse | | | Alison MacG United Kingdom Local time: 04:53 German to English + ... Sometimes very wild and mostly at home. When I was younger I did yoga and loved it. But then I was very fit cause I was working in a kindergarten.:-) Now I really need to move more and dancing is perfect for me. Susan: Charleston. WOW! You must be very fit. I would like to learn Flamenco but no chance here where I live. | | | Ours closes end of next month! | Aug 28, 2008 |
Katharina Loos wrote: Definitely swimming - and I hate to think that our local outdoor pool will be closing this weekend. I love swimming outside, as long as the water is reasonably warm I don't care if it's cold outside, raining, snowing... I also like walking, but swimming is my favourite... The pool in our apartment complex is slated to close for the "winter" end of September. Though I like swimming, I don't get into the pool as often as I used to. Walking is what I end up doing most often (four days a week) followed by visits to a fitness center (two days a week). When we moved to our apartment about five years ago - one of the considerations was that the complex in which it is located had a fitness centre and a swimming pool (also tennis and basketball courts !) I agree with the colleagues who emphasise the importance of exercise and keeping fit, especially for translators who often work out of their home / offices. | | | Pages in topic: < [1 2 3 4 5] > | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: What is your favorite way of keeping fit?
