Lucky you! Dec 2, 2008

I see that, although few, some translators seem to work without a deadline!

Lucky you!!

Sorry I can't comment further, I have a couple of deadlines to meet!

I deliver a day early for customers in Europe Dec 2, 2008

Due to our time zone difference between South America and Europe, I deliver a day early for customers in Europe. My turnaround time for customers in the Western Hemisphere is in real time.

I send translations to European clients the night before, which I considered to be "on time" as opposed to early. I don't feel like getting up at 3 am to send something "on time" that I finished at 10 or 11 pm anyway.

it also depends Dec 2, 2008

generally i try to have it done a bit early. For customers in europe, who want it the next morning, it's the night before. But if it's a big project and I have to go over it several times...i'm grateful for every second!!!!

Depends a lot on the job! Dec 3, 2008

I tend to deliver within half an hour of deadline!

Most of my clients are in the same time zone or one hour behind my zone.
But I often get small jobs in the morning for delivery in the afternoon, or absolutely ASAP.

It means I have to be good at saying NO, sorry, at top speed when I am already running behind schedule, and it means quite a lot of stress some days. But at present I have a job that is taking me a whole two weeks.... and fitting some of the others in as light relief or a change in the programme.

It suits me fine, but it would drive some people mad. Including myself in an earlier life when I had a little son to provide the interruptions, and my flexibility was already stretched to the limit.

It takes all sorts in translation - happy translation, folks!

Depends on my current workload Dec 3, 2008

If I have less to do, I'm more likely to hand in the translation early.

On the deadline, as a policy... Dec 3, 2008

Once, many years ago, I delivered a job quite in advance. After delivery I came across a term that would have fitted perfectly in my translation. What I had written wasn't wrong but that term was just the right one. This was before the Internet was available, so researching was a lot harder.

Since then I decided never to deliver in advance, unless specifically suggested by the client. If I finish my job in advance I keep it aside and reread it again just before delivery - this way sometimes I still find one or two typos or commas in the wrong place.

Hours before delivery Dec 27, 2008

I live in South America. Most of my clients are European, which means they open their offices when it is around 4 or 5 am here. So it is not strange to find me working till late in the night, in order to deliver one to three hours before the deadline. It works!
