Errant question Dec 17, 2008

One can only master the specific thought processes associated with a target community and acquire in turn, socio-linguistic membership. The question does not make sense.

Translation? Dec 17, 2008

Rocio has quoted the philosopher Humberto Matura.
Can anyone translate the quotation into meaningful English?

Basically reality exists inside our heads... (radical constructivism)

Maybe another quote will explain the other quote

Maturana’s Theory

Maturana maintains that “problems do not exist apart from the observers who language them—they are created, or brought forth, in language” (Loria, 1995, p. 158)

http://www.acjournal.org/holdings/vol5/iss3/special/raskin.htm

What I understand:
*****************************
We do not exist without language
(Radical constructivism)
*****************************

And yet another quote....

Languaging and Emotioning

Communication is regarded as a coordination of behaviour rather than the transmission of information.
Languaging is the coordination of coordinations of behaviour.

Humans are immersed so deeply in language that we hardly realise its profound role in constructing our world together.

Emotioning is fundamental. We are always emotioning.
Conversation refers to the flow of emotioning and languaging as they are delicately intertwined.
Conversation does not just refer to the spoken interaction, but entails our body movement and expression, touching and so on.

Conversation and Culture

What we say and do in conversation does not instruct or convey, nor determine a response - it simply triggers changes in the emotioning and languaging of another, which, in turn, shape the next bit of the conversation. Meaning arises in the flow of conversation. It does not reside in words themselves, nor can it be transferred from person to person.

What I understand

***********************

Culture exists in language
We exists in language
Emotioning + languaging = Conversation
Conversation triggers change in Emotioning + Languaging...and meaning is created

***************************

It is so hard to even try to translate" Maturana, I most probably failed, all I can say is that for us who work with language he is a wonderful author....

He is Chilean and origianally a biologist, a great man who writes about so many issues, among them "languaging" "culture" "emotioning" etc...

Greetings!

Rocío

Language is only a part. Dec 18, 2008

I think language is only a part of a culture, there are other parts of it. Mastering a language, let alone a culture, is a very difficult thing, if not impossible, to do.
