Instant messenger from what?
Does this have something to do with Skype & Co?

[Edited at 2009-11-11 09:22 GMT]

Thought so, Skype.
Have it installed and when I activate it, I am vissible. I only activate it if I need it, then I turn it off. If anyone needs me, telephone or mail.

I leave Skype open, online... Nov 11, 2009

... when I use/have used it, or when I remember to turn it on. Otherwise, I don't bother.

Some clients have got used to sending me an e-mail or phoning me "Wanna talk with you. Could you open your Skype?"

Invisible Nov 11, 2009

I have MSN and Skype, and they're both in Invisible Mode. The problem is that I not only have clients listed, but friends as well. The moment these see that I log in, they start chatting like hell! They don't realize at all that I am working or that I could be busy.

So normally, when a client wants to talk to me, they always tell me, "Please, could you connect to Skype"?, or "Could you have your MSN on?" and only then I do. If, for any reason I want to chat with a friend, I check if this person is online, and ask, "Sorry, are you busy"? Cause I don't think it's correct to bother people in the middle of their working hours.

I have Skype, and almost always leave it on invisible to avoid interruptions from friends, etc. But I have notified my regular clients about it, so they know they can contact me and if I'm there I'll respond.

Depends how busy I am Nov 11, 2009

I usually have everything set to on, unless I get to really busy, then I hide. When I get to seriously busy (that's even more than really busy!) I finally switch off!

Living abroad and working from home, I cherish the contact I get via my IMs. I've recently started Skyping with my niece, who's coming up to 17 months old. She kisses 'me' on the screen and sometimes looks behind my sister's laptop to see where I'm hiding! It's not quite the same as being in the same city, but it's really helped me with my long-distance aunty duties!

Skype Nov 11, 2009

Skype, I think it's invisible when I turn it on, and like many other colleagues I prefer to use other programs for friends such as MSN or Yahoo, although the truth is I rarely use them at all nowadays.

I think Skype is great value and if they ever get round to providing calls to mobiles I will gleefully tell my current cellphone provider (Telefonica España) where they can stick their overpriced, inefficient, greedy, labour market-busting company policies and faux client-friendly promotions.

Skype as online and MSN as busy Nov 11, 2009

I find MSN very useful when I have to ask an urgent question to a PM or another translator taking part in the project I'm working at the moment.

MSN and Skype Nov 11, 2009

I set my current status. Why lying? "On line" means "on line", "busy" means "busy" and so on. Those in my contact list who don't understand a simple status message are simply ignored.

Skype Nov 11, 2009

I usually use Skype. For the most part, I keep it visible. None of my clients are on Skype, but I have a several friends and relatives that are. If I get interrupted while working, I usually tell them that I'll visit with them later I'm busy translating.

Otherwise, if I need a break, I'll visit for a few minutes and then go back to the grindstone.

Very useful Nov 11, 2009

I also find MSN and Skype very useful and I also have friends and clients online. However, I've trained my friends and they never bother me, unless I am online at night, which is rare. Some of my friends are also specialists in IT or law, for instance, and they sometimes give me a helping hand with terminology.

Online Nov 11, 2009

I usually set my Skype online as soon as I have finished going through my new mails in my inbox.
Then, online means online and "contactable".

I hardly ever use invisible.
And friends on Skype are no problem because they are usually busy themselves and just want to have a break on Skype and a short chat.
And if I happen to be online but too busy to spare a "good morning" and the resulting 5-minute talk, I just tell them.

Skype Nov 11, 2009

I found this is quite efficient method of communication with my clients.
Of course some strangers migrated into the line from unknown place of unknown time on the globe, but if it's not related to job, I simply leave it alone after few conversations.
