Sad, again Dec 13, 2009

Alas, nowadays it is investment in advertising, not education or knowledge, that pays.

Just tonight I dreamt I was translating a book and was really good at it, but due to personal problems I was not trusted. But that not only stays in dreams, but happens in everyday life too. Good Sunday!

No Dec 13, 2009

I never invested any money in advertisement/marketing - unless you consider attending a social event now and then is part of it - and do not intend to start now!

Other Dec 13, 2009

I voted "other", because since 1973 I practically never advertiseed. Business came from agencies I contacetd and that liked my work, their clients, who conntacted me directly after some time, and collegues in other language combinations. Every advertisement effort including direct mail was without result.

i've been pondering it Dec 13, 2009

Aside from a few ads I've posted on 'free sites' like Kijiji...i don't know how much i can invest in marketing. I've been doing pretty well with word of mouth. I will probably invest in new skills and software.

I'm thinking about it Dec 13, 2009

Not really advertising, but marketing.

I plan to launch my website, with a logo, and get business cards printed. Then I'll send potential customers my profile (hardcopy via snailmail, hence the investment). It shouldn't cost much, but more than I've spent in the past.

Why not invest in both? Dec 14, 2009

I see what you mean, but the question isn´t asking if you will give priority to marketing above everything else. I definitely agree that an investment in education/ training should take precedence above putting a fancy ribbon on an empty package. Why not invest in education and then market those skills? The two aren´t mutually exclusive. There are many ways to market ourselves, and we don´t necessarily have to spend money to do it. In fact, I see marketing as more of an investment of time. We all have to market ourselves in some way or another, otherwise how do potential customers know that we may be just the right person for the job? If you do absolutely nothing to let people know you exist, it´s like opening a shop without telling anyone in town and without putting up a sign.
