a combination... Apr 23, 2010

my income - I am happy, but you know, I would be happier
my leisure time - well, related to the first, more money, more time for me
my marketing skills - I do not pay too much attention, I concentrate on translating, and maybe this would help me achieve the first 2
my translation quality - I think there is always something to learn and improve, so same position as the others

My environment.

I wish clients were more aware of working conditions for translators and interpreters.

My administration/secretarial abilities (lack of) are rudimentary at best. Anything that is not translation of text per se (admin, formatting...) is a real chore for me and I am apt to forget to bill clients if it is for smallish amounts or even for accumulated revisiones (mostly for Universities).
I spent all yesterday afternoon preparing about a dozen bills that I should have issued sooner, and this morning I have had to redo one bill 3 times due to discrepancies in the address this client wants it sent to and other details.
Also yesterday, it took me just over an hour to select and extract the files listed in an Excel doc column corresponding to the second semester of 2010 and add up the figures.
Horses for courses...

which is linked with the "social status" of the profession.
Why are clients aware of the working conditions of all other professionals, like doctors, lawyers, pilots,... and not of the working conditions of translators?

I only aspire to common sense. (As in, you said a booth, not a gas chamber. The basics.)

marketing skills Apr 23, 2010

At the point I am in my career, I think marketing skills is the most important thing to improve! Once I have those, then I can get more clients and improve my income and get some stability into my working hours!

Time management Apr 24, 2010

I tend to be perfectionist, so if I don't have another job in the pipeline I will diddle over it until it's due, leaving me with not much time for the other things in life I care about.

And I do my best work at night, when there are no interruptions, and that leads to sleep deprivation.
