Just one Jan 14, 2011

I have had one work e-mail address for about the last ten years. I have one other personal address which is easier to remember, but it all comes into the same mailbox anyway.

I've never had to use another e-mail address for backup reasons (touch wood!).

Other Jan 14, 2011

I have 1 main email address that I use, although I have another one for backup which was my initial one. The latter was very particular with Spam so not very reliable when I was using my Blackberry for emails, which is why I changed to my present one, which I have had for years now. I also have a hotmail which was used more in the past for Messenger, though now I use Skype for instant chatting with clients.

One or so Jan 14, 2011

I only use free webmails like yahoo or google so far, which sometimes gives rise to problems with my emails being classed as spam by [perhaps overly] security conscious clients.
I have a "main" yahoo email account for work mails, and a gmail for backup as smetimes there are sending issues with yahoo. I check these most often
Then, I have another yahoo account for proz/kudoz queries, one for jokey banter and things between friends, one for things to do with software licencing and similar things (banking, paypal... etc) and another couple as well just for whatever takes my fancy.
I'll probably be setting up a new website soon and will get some free email account with that too, once I manage to decide which of the several deals they offer is best for me...

E mail accounts as filing system Jan 14, 2011

Like Neil I use different accounts for different kinds of business. And having more than one account means that I do have a way round technical issues when they arise.

But the main reason for doing this is that it allows me to concentrate on the matter in hand. If I am dealing with, say, a particular problem for a client, I don't get distracted by the appearance of other completely unrelated messages in my in-box when I am dealing with correspondence. Since I am VERY easily distracted, this is important. If I were a horse, I would most definitely have to wear blinkers!

One main email for business; a secondary one which appears as a contact for new clients on PROZ and for a CC. A third, a Yahoo address, i only use for Paypal and other contacts.

One known to everybody and two for backup purposes Jan 14, 2011

I give everybody -clients and personal contacts- one address only. I have configured this account to send copies of all incoming and outgoing messages to my backup address (with a different provider) AND to my ultimate "online filing drawer", a Gmail account.

This requires regular maintenance work, a habit that takes me no more than 3-5 minutes a day.

I feel safe this way, because if my regular provider ever crashes, I can use the second one.

My third, secret back-up address is where I store copies of all my translations and, of course, the current one. You never know what may happen to your computer overnight (fire, earthquakes, thievery, etc.). In order to save space and have neat files, I have created filters and labeled folders by client. I do not keep personal stuff here.

This has proved to be the safest way to access my stuff from wherever I am, and has nothing to do with the way I backup my work at home

Cheers!

Basically two Jan 14, 2011

I use a separate email address for each business. One for all ProZ related business, the other for my literary business and also for any official dealings.

Another email address serves as backup only.:)

I have two for my translation business, but, really only because I use one at the domain I use for my website (hosted with the hosting the comes with proz membership!), but I use gmail to pick that mail up (and that from several other addresses).
I have several other e-mail address for other ventures. I provide web design/dev/mastering services, and use a different e-mail for that, for instance.

I use the classic firstname@fullname.com for my business email and then I have a backup gmail account for emergencies. My main email is quite robust, but I had an outage during a critical 20 min for which I was quite grateful to have backup. I have also used the gmail account for sending very large files. For anyone still using free accounts, I would really recommend getting a professional account set up. I think it goes a long way towards easing the minds of new clients.

For personal use, I have a lot of email accounts, but most of them are just aliases to my one real account. The big difference is that I only have my business email on my phone. This way I can respond to client queries while I am on the go without having to sort through all the mailing lists and such which fill out my personal account.
