Yes and No Apr 12, 2011

There are a three clients who are connected with me via a social/professional networking website other than here.

Also, especially one of them, keeps in touch via Skype, sometimes just to chat - provided we both have a moment.

Social networking, no Apr 12, 2011

because I do not have and will never have an account with such sites. I do not see Skype as being asocial networking site. I use Skype quite a bit for for quick queries with my customers and for sending larger files.

I have a couple of contacts who started out as customers on Facebook, but we have only linked up soon before they left the respective jobs. So they are more ex-customers, I suppose.

Yes,

I am in contact with a few clients via LinkedIn, but it's only ever business related.

LinkedIn, but not social networking sites Apr 12, 2011

LinkedIn is, of course, a professional networking site.

LinkdIn is a great resource, and through those contacts I have gotten more work. That is the future, no more emails or calls. Conversely, Facebook is merely a social site where I have my real friends (at least in my case) and where I do not mix business at all. Just a matter of preference. It works for me.

No, but I would like that Apr 12, 2011

Everybody is a human being.

I would like to work for all my friends on these websites. To prevent my friends from taking me for granted, that is sending me too much work for too little money, I would simply differentiate the client from the friend in the same person: stop working for a bad client, but going to their house to play video games on the same day!

A bad client can still be my best friend. Excellent friends can also be perfect clients, because they care for you!

But not a lot. If you count skype there are... maybe 2 clients who occasionally contact me that way. Nevertheless, I tend to keep it simply for cheap calls to friends and family and prefer to conduct my business communication via webmail.
A colleague recently told me he wished he hadn't given ANY of his clients his skype details because now it is too easy for them to contact him, which can lead to constant interruptions when trying to work.
I see other sites such as facebook more for keeping in touch with friends and family rather than business.
I was signed up to Linkedin (someone invited me and I accepted)but don't really "get" it... I find it rather intrusive.

some clients with FB some clients with twitter and some clients with LinkedIn

I behave with utmost professionalism on all 3 accounts anyway - and if I want to say something privately on FB I will send a private message anyway

It simplifies things, saves time, and what is to be private, remains private on FB with private messages

but only one or two. One of my favourite clients is on facebook and we became FB friends. We don't communicate much about social things, but it's another way for him to contact me for jobs.
I'm also FB friends with a couple of translators who I have never met or worked with, connected with them through translator groups on FB. But most of my social networking connections with translators are on LinkedIn.

When some clients started to contact me on Sunday because they saw I was connected, I created a second account: one (for clients) is open during office hours, the other (for friends and family) is on line in the evening and on weekends. Only a handful of people are on both lists.
Another option is to put your status on invisible... allows you to contact whoever you wish and discourages people to try and contact you

As for social networks, yes, I am connected to several clients and colleagues on LindekIn (started checking that account once in a while after the Barcelona conference) and even on Facebook: over time, I developed a more personal relationship with several clients, go visit them once every so often and share more personal matters with them on FB (birthday wishes, holiday pictures, leisure activities...)

Colleagues, not clients Apr 15, 2011

Actually, I have one client on LinkedIn, but that's because we were co-workers before she became my client.
