Loads as well Nov 25, 2012

On a quite day, around about 40, and when things are burning, up to 100!

Probably somewhere between one and ten.

Off topic, is it just me, or does anyone else find questions like this pointless and rather irritating? I mean, who wants to know this kind of information, and why?

As an average from Monday to Friday.
If 100 is the new benchmark, then I have possibly hit it once.

Not exactly off-topic: I am just wondering if other vary their responses, or have a handful of stock phrases ranging from "yes, I really want this job" and "no, this is a job from hell which I would not touch with a bargepole"?

When do you guys find the time . . . Nov 25, 2012

to translate?

If I'm dealing with a client, sometimes a bunch of short e-mails fly back and forth at the beginning of an assignment, but other than that, I thought I was spending too much time at an average of 6-10 e-mails a day. It definitely cuts into my work time.

My work only generates e-mails at the time I take the job on and when I deliver it. I should say that most of my jobs are long, so I don't have frequent contact with clients.

At the very most.

And the majority of them are in Japanese which takes much, much longer to type.
It's a cinch typing in English compared with Japanese which is by far a different kettle of fish -- with 2,000 daily use characters to choose from icon_eek.gif and loads of homonyms to make mistakes with. And, don't forget varying levels of politeness depending on the situation.

If I had to write around 50 e-mails in one day, I would have no time to translate. I suppose I'd be a fantastic letter writer, though. icon_biggrin.gif

I answer e-mails re offers, and sometimes three or four fairly quick exchanges are needed to settle price and terms of payment. Occasionally, another exchange or two is needed if I can't initially open the documents to be reviewed/translated.

But once I've actually accepted an assignment, I'm on my own.

And I typically am not deluged with offers of work that I feel obliged to respond to, especially if we discount mass mailings and other messages that I can instantly see are of no interest (e.g., some aspiring author in Argentina wants their novel translated at a rate that would come out to something like $5.00/hour).

Sometimes I'm amazed at the number of emails I've sent during the day, especially when dealing with more than one client / new assignment. This does take a lot of time, even though I try to keep these emails down to the "bare necessities".

Fortunately, my friends understand that it sometimes takes time before they hear back from me.icon_smile.gif

One liners Nov 25, 2012

Despite my occasional long posts, I am actually very much in favour of brief pithy e-mails dealing with one point per e-mail. So I send bucketloads of them. I firmly believe that recipients rarely read beyond the first sentence of a communication. Having taken myself as the example, that is!

Fewer than I thought, but more than most Nov 25, 2012

"Only" about 15-20 per day... (not including non-work emails) but now I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong if I need to exchange emails that often when clearly a good number of my peers don't!

Most of these are "Yes I can do this one" type messages to a couple of regular clients, but all the same, I'm surprised that this seems to be on the high end of the range.

At the risk of sounding like a curmudgeon... Nov 26, 2012

...my work as a translator (and complementary activities) is far more important than spending a minute counting how many emails I send each day.

Is this poll some sort of silly OCD screening mechanism?

No, I'm just trying to determine who is bitter enough to whine about it.
