Yes, somewhat Aug 10, 2013

But that's what supporting a family entails.

Other Aug 10, 2013

Only by questions like this. Otherwise, I'm more or less content with what I have at the moment and my only regret is having to occasionally refuse offers of work because of ill-planned deadlines.

I would add: even when they are all grown-up...

No, not really Aug 10, 2013

Perhaps that's the difference in having your own family and not!

Yes, somewhat Aug 10, 2013

Because on many occasions I am measured by how much I can make.

Not sure Aug 10, 2013

I'm not sure I understand the question! Pressure from...? From myself?
Sometimes I want to work more, sometimes less, but that's no pressure. Indeed, I have no children, but if I had, I think I'd rather tend to work less (but maybe for a better pay) in order to have more time to spend with them.

Pressured by whom? To get or to take? Jobs = income? Aug 10, 2013

Some poll questions border meaninglessness, and these seem to have become more frequent lately.

First, there is the difference between feeling and actually being pressured. Every working professional should feel pressured all the time, be it for the need to provide for their family, or merely from the desire for accomplishment.

Of course, some clients will actually pressure translators to take on a job for the most varied reasons. The latter's response may vary, depending on their ability to say 'no' and/or to assert their terms and conditions. If such ability is not so developed, they'll yield to the pressure and wind up in a situation where they didn't want to be. Otherwise, they might wind up in the same situation, if their need for income exerts an overwhelming pressure on them.

There is a difference between selling and being bought, i.e. between having to chase clients to sell, or having to deal with a lot of people who want to buy the individual's products or services. In short, this might translate respectively into a pressure to get (go after) more jobs, or to take (accept) more offers, 'regardless'.

More jobs don't necessarily mean more income. An unbiased, unprejudiced self-assessment on the value of what one has to offer, properly positioned in the marketplace is a must. As that person's time is a resource equally rationed to every being on this planet, they need to sort out what is a more, and what is a less 'profitable' endeavor to use that time for maximum benefit.

So this question might require assuming a number of potential fallacies to be answered.

Yes, definitely Aug 10, 2013

with the difference that for me it's not about pressure, but about desire
I like money and I like making them (doing what I like and respecting my leisure time, I might add)

Not really Aug 10, 2013

That's aside from the fact that I won't allow myself (or anyone else) to lay pressure on me.

pressure Aug 10, 2013

The only pressure I feel is: translate a certain amount of words per month in order to guarantee a place to live, food and other needs to my family + saving a bit for our holiday.

Pressure... Aug 10, 2013

I feel that I owe it to myself to make more money. Accordingly, I subject myself to a certain amount of pressure so that I will be able to meet my income expectations in the longer term.
