I do not think there is such a thing as a celebrity translator.

Paul Maar Jun 18, 2014

Paul Maar is one of the most important modern German writers for children and young people. He is a novelist, playwright, translator and illustrator.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Maar

He is an artist at playing with words, both for books that he has translated and for those he has written himself. Some of his own books are actually untranslatable.

Quite a few Jun 18, 2014

Margaret Jull Costa just got the OBE for services to literature (richly deserved for her translations of Saramago, among many others).

1. St. Jerome!!
2. Gregory Rabassa
3. Elizabeth Bishop
4. Samuel Putnam
5. Constance Garnett
6. Eugene Nida

I wanted to add Vladimir Nabokov, but it turns out his wife Vera was the translator in the family.

There's a list of famous translators at http://tinyurl.com/krdy8ol.

To my surprise, Whittaker Chambers--the famous Soviet spy--made the list. He translated "Bambi" into English. Who knew!?!!!

None. There was something about one on Facebook today, but I had no time to read the article and don't recall his name...

Linguists? Jun 18, 2014

You mean, like David Crystal, Noam Chomsky, Henry Widdowson, Sapir, Frank Palmer, David Wilson, William Nemser, Michael Halliday, Saussure, Seidlhofer, Bllomfield ... I could go on for ages.

Do you think we could stop calling people who speak a foreign language a linguist?
