The best clients should be those who pay without haggling and who do so on time. Most of my income comes from my direct clients, so if your whole world revolves around money, then they are my "best" clients. However, I like the prestige that comes from working with public institutions like universities, and their deadlines are usually less absurd, so it's a toss-up really.

Just a fact. They give me virtually all of my work.

Considering good and enduring income and relaxed deadlines my best clients are publishing houses and international organizations

By coincidence I don't work with any in my country of residence, and by choice I don't work with any in my target language country.

All my clients are abroad, both agencies and direct (a lot fewer of those, though).

My best client is always the one I am working with at any given moment, especially when I know that timely payment is as certain as is the timely delivery of the completed job.

Law firms, cultural institutions and such like. They're likely to have the cash, be professional in their dealings, have enough language awareness to know what they're talking about or keep out, and actually pay on time and that's a quick time, not 90 days.

The worst clients are time wasters with complicated admin or unwarranted suggestions of changes, or translation agencies that don't know much about translation. The latter can still be nice to deal with in general, but the notion itself is deeply unsettling.

They provide good work with good rates. I do work with native country agencies too. But I never miss any chance to get international agencies work. Because they are important part of my business.

domestic AND international agencies, but there are times when international send me most of my work.
there are a few local or domestic ones that provide me with some regular jobs, but lately a lot of my work is from overseas.

It takes them till lunchtime just to find their desks, so they're never in any hurry to get translations back, and you know they're good for the money.

In Scandinavia they even pay on time.

Whether private or public, local or international, small or large, agencies or direct customers, I’ve found that best clients are good communicators, well-organized, financially stable, want to work in partnership with you, send regular, interesting projects, value you and are willing to pay what you're worth…

It's not the kind of business entity... Aug 20, 2014

...but its business philosphy.

My best clients know my name and use it when offering me projects suited to my areas of expertise, are devoted to quality, suggest reasonable deadlines, pay fair rates on time and offer support when needed.

These tend to be smaller agencies, both domestic and international, but I have a couple of large agencies who grew themselves from small agencies while successfully maintaining their standards.

For these clients, not only do I go the same extra mile/kilometer(re) that I do for all of my clients; I also work to provide the added value that makes them stand out to their own clients.

I get most of my work from them, and they pay very well (the best). I like my other clients, too, but money talks.
