I'm not sure May 25, 2016

As I use CAT tools for all projects, I lose track of which ones actually demand it. But I'd say more than half require them to be used.

the choice of "none" should have been in the poll May 25, 2016

Not only do none of my clients "require" or ask for them - most haven't even heard of them. How can a customer ordering a product think he can require which tools the expert uses to produce the product. He can certainly ask for it, however.

Less than half - Other May 25, 2016

I have a few long-term clients for whom the use of a CAT tool doesn't make sense in a terminology saving kind of way. However and nonetheless, I always use my CAT tool for those translation as well because of the organising and administrative features it provides. They don't know that I use it and it really doesn't affect them nor their projects.

More than half May 25, 2016

also because I eschew new clients requiring CAT tools. BTW, direct clients mostly do not know what a CAT tool is.

My inner pedant almost made me vote "other" May 25, 2016

Because it's fewer than half, not less than half.

And in my case, none.

Some would like me to, but I refuse.

Even though I do actually use CAT for all jobs.

Awkward? C'est moi.

None ... May 25, 2016

None of them (an option not offered in this poll), because I don't use CAT tools.
Awkward? Moi aussi.

Awkward? No. It's up to you, not to them to use CAT toolsicon_smile.gif

I use mine for almost all jobs too, but won't be dictated whether I should use it or which one. Only one of my agencies wants it. They tried to force Trados on me, but in the end they don't care how I work, as long as manuals are consistent and well translated.

One required me NOT to use a CAT tool May 25, 2016

This request came from a client via the agency in charge of translating its webpage. The reasoning was that otherwise the text provided will be stilted and won't read naturally. I can see their point about the dangers, but confidently ignored the instruction.

Again, not provided as an option.

In tech translation, use of a CAT tool is the only way to ensure consistency across multiple files in big projects.
Termbases and autosuggestion take a big burden off this translator, especially with long, sometimes difficult-to-spell-properly technical terms.

"Over half" doesn't come close to fully answering this person's needs. Awkward? It would be very without a CAT tool.

Oops May 25, 2016

Several of us have answered the question "how many require" rather than "how many do not require".

That must mean something.

NONE of my regular clients require (requires? Damn you, Stephen Fry!) the use of CAT tools. I did some work for one agency that likes Deja Vu a few years ago, but haven't done anything for them since. The one or two agencies I do occasionally work with are just happy to get the translated text in time and don't really care which magic wand I may or may not use. The rest are all direct clients and I doubt if they know much about CAT, if anything....
