Quite surprised Aug 30, 2017

I quite surprised to see the top rank on the poll answers was between 1 - 5. I expected 16 - 20.

When? This month? This year? Over the years? I don’t keep track of these things. I’ve been a member since 2007 so at first I did contact a few agencies but then experience told me that it was far better to wait for clients to contact me either through my profile or through the directory and that’s what I’ve been doing since. Results have been quite mixed, meaning that most have been one-offs but some have stayed with me and send work regularly. For the same reason, I’ve been bidding to translation jobs very occasionally only when a job looks interesting.

Hundreds of contacts... Aug 30, 2017

... with prospects, colleagues with whom I exchanged help either way, colleagues I referred to or was referred by. However constant, worthy, and sustainable clients, only two so far, in almost two decades.

It also depends what you mean by contacts.

But even if you mean actual personal contacts, I have attended several powwows where there were more than 20 people present.

I have a long list of real clients who found me on this site, and have met some, or talked to them on the phone as well as working for them.

I have had the honour of meeting several site staff and some of the early moderators in person, and I have mailed or enjoyed discussions in the forums with dozens, probably hundreds.

It suits me fine - I am not a very sociable person, so the online platform is perfect. And when I do actually meet people... then it really is a pleasure.

I don't seek out clients here because I don't need to.

There are a handful of translators I have had private message conversations with, never met any in person. I don't think that really counts as friendship.

Almost all my clients came via Proz.com

Please define contacts Aug 30, 2017

I chose "other" because there are so many kinds of contacts I have made over the last ten years: Clients, 20-40; PMs representing the above clients, 200+, ProZ.com members who have private-messaged me to offer advice, ask a question, or make a comment, 10; ProZ.com members that I have messaged to ask for help or advice, 5; Friends who have visited my home, 1; ProZ.com members to whom I have sent articles they might be interested in, 2.
In addition, perhaps ProZ.com members who have responded to my posts on the message board also count as contacts---in this case, hundreds and hundreds.

Big fat zero Aug 30, 2017

This isn't really the place to meet niche customers happy to pay boutique prices for something special.

I might have made a few enemies here and there.

I wasn't sure what was meant by "contacts" Aug 30, 2017

I assumed it might mean clients. I don't look for clients here, but enjoy some terrific conversations. The site is informative and focused on the language industry and that's why I come here.

Hundreds Aug 31, 2017

I've taken contacts to mean colleagues and clients. I've met hundreds of fellow translators through powwows, and dozens of clients have approached me after finding me on Proz.

In my case, it's the same thing. I met hundreds of colleagues, made contact with most of my clients, and I receive e-mails practically every day from people who found my profile in ProZ.
However, this only works for those who actively participate in the forums and answer as many colleague questions as possible in KudoZ. Registering as a user and waiting for the contacts to fall on you lap just won't do.
