I look at my phone whenever there's a notification beep. If it's a client, I almost always stop whatever I'm doing, excuse myself if necessary, and respond immediately.

I should mention that I receive only one or two client contacts per month. Most of my work consists of a few large projects for a very few regular clients. It would be different if I were doing several smaller jobs every week.
