Other Mar 15

It varies. If I'm busy and engrossed in something, I might not get up for almost an hour at a time. This week, I'm looking after a friend's dog and I take him for a run in the morning and evenings, so I'm getting a bit more exercise...

It depends, but not at regular intervals for sure! I have to interrupt work when the phone rings or someone calls at the door. I tend to have a break when I get stuck with a problem, then I get up to stretch my legs, take a coffee, do some chores, walk the dog… Let's say that if the source text is interesting and well-written I might get so absorbed that I forget to take a break for some time (2/3 hours?). When I am absorbed in what I'm doing, I’ll activate an autopilot mode and I’m known to have answered my daughter without my mind registering the fact.

Well, there's the washing ... Mar 15

Going downstairs to hang out the washing and coming back up, ten minutes later going downstairs to bring in the washing and coming back up, hanging it up indoors, repeat ad infinitum ... it rains a lot down in darkest Cornwall. No shortage of exercise here.

Washing! Mar 15

Ah, the washing!! If it weren't for house chores, I dare say I would have gotten even less exercise than I do now. Once or twice an hour - first time to put in a load, second time around 50 minutes later when it's done, depending on the cycle.
But like many of you said, if the text I'm translating is interesting, I'm less prone to take a break...

Subliminal message :D Mar 15

Are Proz.com staff insinuating that were out of shape? I have to agree to an extent, as it's mostly a sedentary profession.

Stand-up desk Mar 16

I have a stand-up desk with a treadmill so I actually spend part of my working day walking. As I also have a Fitbit, I now aim for 15,000 steps a day, which is around 6.5 miles. I find that the more I work while I walk, the easier it gets. Walking is a great way to focus without getting distracted.
In case anyone is interested, you'll find a few posts on my blog about non-sitting setups.

It can be a very long time Mar 17

I remember when I was working in an office, sometimes I would step outside my room to talk to the staff only to find out that they had left a long time ago and everything was dark.

About twice an hour Mar 18

I smoke and the deal in my place is smoking only in the balcony. So I stand up about twice every hour. While I'm smoking, I wash dishes and do other home tasks (breaking the balcony rule, WTF).

Every two hours, but I don't really feel like sedentary... Mar 21

My work day is organized around my kids' school hours and my house chores. I get up early in the morning, work for two hours "non-stop" at my desk, then I stop for two hours to get up the kids, take care of the washing, the dishes and other chores and take the kids at school (cycling). When I'm back, I work again for two hours more and stop to prepare lunch, get my kids from school (cycling again), have lunch and cycle back to school, this takes about three hours. Afternoon, I work again for two hours and cycle to school to get the kids home, then I stop for five hours untill they go to bed and I go back to work for two more hours before I go to bed or read a book or prepare my plans for the garden or anything else... Cycling is very good for me to unscrew problems, I often have my best ideas whyle I cycle to school and I carry a notebook to scribble down anything before it goes (and before the kids start to count me their day).
