I turn it upside down every morning and my cleaning lady applies the vacuum cleaner treatment once a week with a moderate suction power. For the greasy stuff that gets stuck I use a cleaning gel from time to time. I also clean the inside of my PC when dust builds up with compressed air, as it can slow down the fans used for air-cooling. Lesson learned some years ago. Ouch!

I have a keyboard cover that catches all the dirt. Periodically I remove it and wash it. Simples. And I don't have a cleaning lady. I am a member of UVW !

While I'm reluctant to use somebody else's keyboards and gadgets, I always wash my hands before using a laptop or a PC. So vacuum-cleaning/wiping it once a month is mostly ok.

Keyboards Nov 16

I have a monitor and keyboard attached to my laptop. I use antibacterial cleaner when everything is switched off. It's a good job I can touch type because some of the letters have worn away!!

What does 'cleaning a keyboard' mean? I 'dust' it quite often but I stopped turning it upside down since I had to change from PC to laptop because I am afraid I will break the tool that I use to earn.

method? Nov 17

I'm interested in how folks are cleaning it. Vacuum with a little brush and so on, yet. What about the keys? My laptop has relatively shallow keys that are flat. The ergonomic keyboard is a different matter. I should also complain, because most of the letters have rubbed off, and the are where the wrists rest has been flaking off. But that's a different matter.

My advice when cleaning your kepboard Nov 17

Advice: whenever you attempt to clean your keyboard be cautious to keep any beverage, tea or coffee away. In case of any spilled liquid on your laptop, you need to know the right action. I had a bitter lesson because i was not aware of the proper manner so I lost not only the keyboard or battery but both the built-in hard disk and the expensive and fully-packed eternal disk which was connected to the laptop.

Keyboard covers Nov 18

You can get keyboard covers for any type of keyboard. They're moulded to fit over the keys and you can take them off to clean them. And if you spill anything on them, it doesn't matter. Just wipe it off.

I took this picture of the back view of my keyboard one day when I happened to see it from that angle - instant thoughts of Dali.

I have a feeling that "any kind of keyboard" doesn't extend to this funny looking thing.

keyboard cover Nov 18

This might sound like a silly question, but I have never heard of a keyboard cover. I looked at your link, Tom of London. Do you type with it on? If so, how is the touch? I imagine a quick, light touch wouldn´t work very well. (Otherwise, it sounds like a great idea, to keep the actual keyboard clean.)

It depends on the quality of the cover, but the cover should be designed in such a way that a very light touch should be sufficient for the buttons to get pressed. As with when you buy a new keyboard, you have to test it out a bit, and then hope that your experience in the store is the same as at home. And as with new keyboards, you simply adapt to the new touch requirement. I've had to use one at the offices of a client, and simple typing was itself not a problem.

Yes, Molly, I'm typing this now with my keyboard wearing its skin-tight cover. There is no difference in how it feels. Try one! They're very cheap. Just make sure you buy the type that exactly fits your keyboard layout.

Wiping and vacuum are not actual cleaning Nov 19

Cleaning a keyboard implies on removing all keys and cleaning everyting. I only do that about twice a year. Wiping, vacuum cleaning and other methods without removing the keys is a mere partial cleaning. So what you do is you buy a mechanical gamer keyboard so you can actually clean it.
