demanding? Aug 3, 2006

Hi,

I don't quite get the idea of what 'demanding' means here. Demanding quality? Demanding attention?

I guess each client is demanding as it expects quality and punctual delivery:)

I answered as if it read: "How likely would you work with an annonying client again?"

No, thank you! Aug 3, 2006

I voted Unlikely, although I would have voted NEVER for one of the two adjectives.

I can handle demanding clients (although I prefer lovely ones ), but if I ever meet an annoying client... I will do my best never to meet him/her again.

Demanding, yes. Annoying, no Aug 3, 2006

We would first have to define the terms.

I do not mind demanding clients (who demand punctuality, precision, quality, perfection).

I cannot stand annoying clients (who call too often, are never satisfied, always want more for less, complain about everything, etc.).

Exactly! (and a confession) Aug 3, 2006

I looked up for the word 'demanding' to see if there was a nuance I might be missing. I found the translations: 'exigente' (which is ok, if the client isn't... I am!), but I also found 'difícil' (thought of our 'jodido' in Spanish, somebody help me to translate into English to make myself clear! ). So I understood demanding as 'unbearably picky.' If I can choose, I prefer to live without those clients.

I help them finding another translator... Aug 3, 2006

If demanding means annoying, my answer is NEVER.

What I usually do is giving them the addresses of other translation agencies to make sure they leave me alone!

But don't be afraid, dear colleagues: I only give them the addresses of translation agencies that I know are unprofessional or have unpleasant owners!!

I voted for "Other" because for me it depends on the price. I can put up with annoying if they are paying well.

If there's really good money in it, I would.
Well, depending how annoying/demanding the client is vs how well he/she pays

Demanding can be healthy Aug 3, 2006

I have to admit to having mixed feelings about demanding. On the one hand, their insistance on details, important and unimportant, can add significant time to any project. On the other hand, demanding clients have helped me raise my own standards and gotten me many clients. If you can please the demanding client, they often recommend you. Their praise is well earned and very valuable. As for annoying, it all depends in which way.

Really surprised... Aug 3, 2006

... that there is no option in the poll that would read "Never".

Because many previous posters (myself included) would vote just that.

And as for Derek's comment re: paying well...

Usually clients who are demanding, annoying, unreasonable, unhappy etc. - usually these people tend to find/invent some "problems or issues" and delay payment, or make a partial payment - or indeed no payment at all!

So I would never again (based on my prior experience) work for unreasonable & annoying clients - even if they promise me a lot of money. Even if they pay in advance (and they never do - not even a partial prepayment. This is a very good indicator of future "issues" with payment).

Good luck - and lots of good, reasonable and promply paying clients to us all!
