(Don't knock it. A parrot tattoo is supposed to have been the hallmark of the translators' guild in Punic Carthage).

What do you mean,
as a logo e.g. for proz or for a translators association?
as an icon for a button that brings up a directory?
I find this poll completly useless, since it gives no indication of the context in which this symbol will be used.
This will end in a typical GIGO scenario.

(ideally a multilingual one) is at least my ideal symbol of being or becoming a translator since when I was a kid. I actually have a picture I took with an Albanian-English dictionary when I was still in Elementary school and I had my English teacher sign it on the back.

I would say multiple bridges, some kind of interconnecting media.
I have no idea how to put that in a single, understandable image, though.

Although I've nothing against the Rosetta Stone, I wouldn't like it because it's the logo of a notorious non-paying agency I worked for last year.
I prefer a bridge - a famous one, perhaps, such as the Rialto bridge, or the Millau viaduct, for a more modern effect.

I like the idea of multiple bridges steming from the same point of origen and reaching the same destination. The bridges could be differnet types and lengths, some could be cut off in the middle leading to oblivion.

Its not really a suggestion, but the question reminded me of something Ive red some time ago - in ancient times translators/interpreters had a tatoo of a lovely bird - a parot - to identify them.

I don't agree. To me it seems that this poll is just posing a fun, hypothetical question, and I thought it was interesting to see the images that different translators have come up with in connection with their work.
Maybe John will correct me if I'm wrong, but I read it as an exercise in letting the creative juices flow, and a way to take the focus off work-specific subjects for a few minutes.
And I really like the tower of Babel suggestion, that would get my vote.

No, a nail on the head isn't my choice of symbol! : )
I just wanted to agree with Christina Townsend. She hit the nail on the head. The purpose is to disconnect from more pressing, stressful things for a bit and be creative (brainstorm a bit) with colleagues. No one has to participate but those who do should see it as a congenial time with others with whom they have a lot in common.

Whilst not wishing to ignore all the other factors in communication, I think it would be important to include some human aspect, a human figure perhaps, to stress that it´s not just a question of dictionary/computer work.

...and if I remember correctly the amount of wings indicated how many languages the translator spoke. So a parrot would be a fun symbol.
