Silence helps when I want to concentrate; staying alert is another matter. I'm a die-hard caffeine and Ginseng fan.

This is how awake I look after a caffeine and ginseng cocktail:

Does meditation help? Oct 17, 2007

My concentration is usually very good and I don't get easily distracted when working. I don't know if this has to do with any other habits such as reading or listening to music or if it's just innate.

I've heard that practising meditation regularly helps improve concentration, but since I don't meditate myself, I don't know if this is true. I know that some companies now offer yoga and meditation for their employees during office hours, so possibly relieving stress and being calm and relaxed does help one's concentration.

Music! Oct 17, 2007

Definitely music. As varied as possible and music of a good quality, whatever that should mean in music...

Coffee and MUSIC! Oct 17, 2007

Reading is one of the greatest pleasures, but I get too lost in it, so I strictly restrict it* to the lovely hours I spend on the Buenos Aires public transportation system.

Coffe helps me a great deal, but after 20+ years of abusing it, I'm trying to quit. Not succeeding, I'm afraid.

I'm a helpless music junky, but it can be a two-edged sword as a helper, because it irritates me if I don't like it enough, or gets me carried away if I like it too much.
Aimee Mann, for example, as much as I love her, doesn't work. I always end up singing along, neglecting my work, scaring my kids... not good.
Same for AC/DC or dance music: headbanging against the keyboard tends to l-oWer teh q>ualiTiy of whtAewver i'M ddOïng.

Therefore, I'm currently exploring the advantages of midtempo electronica as a "translator's soundtrack". It seems to work so far.

*By the way, isn't "I strictly restrict it" a pretty good tongue twister? Short 'n tough, like Sammy Gravano. Yeah, yeah, I'm digressing again...

a 5-minute break Oct 17, 2007

preferably away from the computer, but that depends where my cat is (he's currently asleep on the desk beside me, so I won't be going far for this 5-minute break).

Silence and soft music Oct 17, 2007

When I am studying or working, for example, I need silence or soft music. I have practiced yoga last year and it helped me a lot. It is wonderful the peacefulness it brings to your mind; it is highly recommended.
Best,
Fernando

A combination... Oct 17, 2007

...of absolute silence (or industrial-strength earplugs) and a "triple-tea": espresso-sized cup of boiling hot tea made with three teabags and three spoons of sugar, drunk in three gulps...

Well the silence part is sort of theoretical since they're building a new house right across the street in front, and putting a new storey onto the one behind me; the earplugs help, some.

The tea tastes so bad that it helps me forget about the racket outside my window!

Coffee in the morning/tea in the afternoon Oct 17, 2007

Coffee mid-morning, then Earl Grey tea in the afternoon, progressing to a smoky mixture of China, Darjeeling and Lapsong Souchong in the evening. Actually I think I'm addicted to tea - I'm sure I couldn't do without it!

silence and notes Oct 17, 2007

I usually take a break in silence and make a few random notes in keywords style and read them later. Best regards, Brandis

Music and Caffeine Oct 17, 2007

Music (loud) and caffeine in copious amounts, both of which probably not good come to think of it, but absolutely essential nontheless

A varying combination Oct 17, 2007

It depends on my needs: complete silence if I need to concentrate, some music when work gets more relaxed and coffe, tea or mate, alternately, to keep me awake.
