Traditional clothing Jan 10, 2008

I sometimes wear Arab "jellabiyah" (or "galabea") working at home - a kind of floor-length thobe, worn in Middle East- a gift from my friends from Egypt. It is exclusively comfortable - warm in winter and cool in summer. But i usually wear a formal suit at the office.

Traditional clothing is one advantage of frequent travel (for interpreters, for example, and translators who've lived abroad for long periods of time). They've evolved for ages under local conditions of extreme heat or cold and are never "out of style" ("national costume" is one of the usual concessions made in places where formal attire is demanded). Working attire in this category is almost always comfortable (farmers, shepherds or tribesmen are infinitely more practical than fashion victims), apart from being picturesque. On top of that, high-fashion designers often resort to them for inspiration.

Hence, "pyjamas" can be warm Anatolian riding trousers, stylish stretch or traditional churidars (they were there long before tights or leggings), with footwear options ranging from felt boots to fur-lined slippers and all sorts of sandals... and you can walk out in them as well, knowing Dior or Versace used them as references.
