Venue? Aug 16, 2002

Does anyone have any ideas? Friday nights in London bars tend to be very crowded...
Where is everyone based?

Based in Barcelona... Aug 16, 2002

Hola Samantha,

I am based in Spain. My idea is to fly in that day and stay one or two nites. It all depends of what rate I can get at the hotel.

Let us try to get a good crowd attending this powwow.

Cheers,

JL

Central London Sep 11, 2002

I'm based in Reading, 30 minutes outside of London and would appreciate a central venue. I also think it's fairer on people coming from farther afield too, as it can be a nightmare getting to Richmond, say, from NE London, let alone Spain! There are some reasonably priced venues in central London, e.g. Gaby's (30 Charing Cross Road, Jewish food), El Pirata (5-6 Down Street, Spanish food), Masala (9 Marshall Street, Indian food) and that's just off the top of my head, without looking at something like the cheap chapter in the Time Out Eating Guide.

Friday nights Sep 11, 2002

For some reason I thought the First was a bank holiday-but not in Gb.. So the evening- the places suggested by Sam D what are there chances of both booking and being able to have some sorts of conversations- I.e quiter places ? What sorts of prices Sam D ? If Im in town soon I will go to see-
Also, where is everyone coming from ? So far, Kingston,Reading, Spain..

Venues Sep 11, 2002

I hadn't thought of the quietness angle at all. Being a tapas bar, El Pirata will be noisy on a Friday night; I've only been to Masala once and it was relatively quiet.

Here are some more, although I don't know them:

Is there anybody who lives in London who could recommend somewhere moderate, quiet and central, with good food!?

confused -is this Friday lunchtime or Friday evening ?
I do not hink it is a bank holiday in GB ? On the web site it says 12.00- then a few od us are assuming that is is the evening- as if most are working, then who is free lunchtime... We do mean evening ? Or do we change it to the Sat. the next day for lunchtime ?

Deborah - Fri lunchtime would be better than the evening, and also easier to find a nice (and cheap) restaurant to accommodate us. I could also do Sat lunchtime if that is better for everyone?

anyone ready to take the lead here? Sep 19, 2002

i must take responsibility for starting this mayhem as i started up the thread on a london powwow... but i am out of the country til end of october hence avoided putting myself forward as the organiser... now that we have enough interest, is there anyone out there who is willing to organise the logistics... i.e. name a venue and sort out booking arrangements if necessary. i think a central london venue as has been suggested would make most sense as there are people coming in from outside the city. friday evening is going to better for most people i would imagine. but can everyone state clearly their preference for evening or afternoon and then we can go with the majority

Taking a lead Sep 19, 2002

I'll organise it, since no one else has volunteered!

I suggest Ask's Pizza at 48 Grafton Way W1, near Warren St tube. Not too expensive, reasonable selection of pizza and pasta, central but not trendy, downstairs seating for a group. I've been there several times for similar does. It comes to about £25 per head when you add it all up, including drinks and tip. I'm not prepared to work out what everyone spent - just add 10% and divide by the number of people!

Please email me directly at david_knowles@compuserve.com with lunchtime or evening preference (Fri 1 Nov).

I'll post the results here and book a table if there's enough interest.

ASK pizzeria Sep 20, 2002

Some information about it:

http://www.dma.be/p/ultra/1996/travel/eat.htm

Ciao a tutti,

JL

PD Prefer evening option

********************
Number of visits?
Several, most recently April 2002.

Location?
Next to Warren Street tube station.

Food?
Pizza and pasta, with Italian wines and salads. Fairly similar to Pizza Express, ASK are a chain with a set menu throughout their restaurants. There is also a dish of the day - usually a pasta and pesto style dish.

Clientele
Office workers - ASK restaurants are in prime city locations and this is no exception.

Cost?
About £20 per head.

Anything else?
Staff are friendly and helpful, but the service is a bit slow and you may need to book in advance to secure a table. There is disabled access, but many tables are downstairs so ring to reserve if it will be an issue.

Opening Hours?
Midday to midnight.

Official Website?
None.

Pizza on 1 November Sep 23, 2002

On the assumption that Dan is coming (since he suggested it) the preferences are

Dan Brennan Evening
David Knowles Evening
Samantha Tasker Lunchtime
Gillian Noameshie Lunchtime
Sophie Vaudolon Evening
José Villanueva Senchuk Evening

Pretty even, but evening has it so far.

Any more takers? Please let me know.
