Hi everyone,

I'm currently thinking of taking this course in order to specialise in legal translation, but before I part with 5000 GBP, I would like to make sure it is worth it.

I would have to make a lot of sacrifices for this MA as I live in Ireland and would have to do the course by way of distance learning + 4-day compulsory attendance in London every second month (and I've got a small child at home).

Anyway, as I said, I really need to ensure this is a good and widely recognised course before embarking on it. I have looked on the internet for reviews and feedback but have found none so far as City has only implemented it a couple of years ago.

I have read on the IOL forum that some fellow prozian (ex-lawyer apparently) had given it a "glowing report" but couldnt find any reference to this here.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

If money is an issue, and you don't actually need an MA, why not do the modules that interest you?

Of course, you may want the MA. I found the module I did (litigation) to be very good and well worth the time spent on it.

To anyone who's done the course (or individual modules): what's the workload like? It sounds like the four contact days are pretty intense, but how much work is involved outside of this?

I managed to get in touch with someone who is currently wrapping up their second and last year on the course.

In a nutshell, it's a great course and they're pretty satisfied with it. However, from what I gather, here are the negative points:

- too much emphasis is placed on the legal aspect of things, most of the lectures are spent studying the 2 legal systems which is great BUT not so much insight into how to translate legal documents

In a nutshell, it's a great course and they're pretty satisfied with it. However, from what I gather, here are the negative points:

- too much emphasis is placed on the legal aspect of things, most of the lectures are spent studying the 2 legal systems which is great BUT not so much insight into how to translate legal documents

The person I talked to said that it's still a struggle because they kinda have to research on their own how to go about translating official legal docs.

Said a long list of expensive books was given before the start of the course and that the students were tested later on whether they read these books or not. Said that they found the linguistic/translation aspect of the course quite succint and boring with mainly general translation advices given but nothing that will really prepare you to do a good job at translating legal documents.

As applications close in 5 days, I think I will wait until next year and try and get more feedback.

Applications for the MA may close in 5 days, but I was told you can enrol in CPD courses up to 6 days before they start, which would give you until the end of August to decide (and to gather more feedback!).
