Since its establishment as a government foundation in 1972, the Japan Foundation has sponsored many significant projects aimed at developing a better understanding of Japanese culture in the world.

It has offices in many different cities and runs several sponsorship and grant-giving programs that may vary depending on the population it targets. Some of these are:

The United States Japan Foundation:

The Los Angeles office:

The Japan Foundation Toronto:

The Japan Foundation New York:

The Japan Foundation Bangkok:

The Sweden Japan Foundation:

The Japan Foundation Sydney:

The UK Japan Foundation:

The Japan Foundation Endowment Committee (UK):

The Japan Foundation Manila:

The Japan Foundation Seoul:

The Japan Foundation Jakarta:

The Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership:

Applications for publication grants are accepted, but generally require the intervention of a publisher.

The grant program tends to be organization-based, but very generously considers the position of Japanese language and culture educators.
