The University of Arkansas Press Award for Arabic Literature in Translation
The King Fahd Center for Middle East and Islamic Studies and The University of Arkansas Press invite submissions for the Arkansas Arabic Translation Award. The prize awards $5000 for the translator or translators and $5000 for the original author. (A translation by the original author will be eligible for only a $5000 award.) The University of Arkansas Press will publish the award-winning translation. Runners-up may also be considered for publication.
The original work must have been published in Arabic. Entries may include
works of fiction (either prose or poetry) non-fiction works in the literary tradition (such as memoirs, theoretical writings, essays, or travel literature) non-fiction works of academic significance. Since publication comes with the award, submitted texts must be book-length (approximately 100+ pages typed, double-spaced).
Submissions may not be under contract with another press.
Entrants should submit
- four copies of the original and four copies of the translation - contact information for both author and translator - a brief introduction to the significance of author and translated text - published reviews if available - a brief profile or vitae of the translator - a formal release from a living author and/or any other relevant copyright holder, including the original publisher
Entries must be received by April 15. The winner will be announced in November, in conjunction with the annual Middle East Studies meeting.
All submissions will be judged blindly by a three-person jury of distinguished scholar-translators chosen from outside the University of Arkansas system. Current students, faculty or staff of the University of Arkansas, their spouses, or immediate family members are not eligible to submit translations. Please direct all submissions and any inquiries to:
