Hello everyone,

A friend of mine is almost done with high school is considering jumping in the translation business. He is looking for online translation courses. We found quite a few but we're not sure which would be the best. His language pair would be English-Arabic but he's also looking into general translation courses. Any ideas?

Academic programs Jun 1

Personally, if I were thinking about starting a career as a translator now, I would enroll in an online program that is attached to a university and ends in a degree. It may not be cheap, but it would provide a solid, structured academic foundation and be helpful when establishing a business (if that is the aim). To put it plainly, it looks good on the resume. My path was quite different, but translation has become a gigantic global business since I started, with lots of people jumping in who have no ability and/or no clue simply because they know two languages. Academic credentials would give your friend an edge. I still think it's possible to become a professional translator without a specific translation degree, but one needs a lot of skills, persistence and willingness to put in a lot of very hard work to do it successfully. And you have to love what you do.
