The Salzburg Seminar, a grant-giving institution, will be sponsoring a seminar entitled "The Telling of Lives: Biography as a Mirror on Society", from 30 September to 6 October 2006. It will be chaired by Mark Pachter, the Director of the National Portrait Gallery in Washington. The grant comes from the The Edward Cone Foundation.

The genre biography enjoys unprecedented popular appeal and influence; people take meaning from individual lives in their struggle to understand the human endeavor, in their attempt to fathom individual motivation, achievement or greatness. But, perhaps more significantly, biography -- whether in the form of a book, film, play or portrait -- serves as a mirror on culture, society and history, and, as such, can have a radical impact on thinking about the past and the present. This session will convene a diverse international group of participants creatively engaged in the "telling of lives" -- biographers, filmmakers, actors, portrait artists, photographers, journalilsts, literary critics and scholars -- to shed new light on the power of biography to shape perception and opinion, to enlighten, to change minds.

Salzburg Seminar sessions are held in Schloss Leopoldskron, Salzburg, Vienna (remember the Von Trapp family mansion in "The Sound of Music"?) Successful grant applicants get to attend the seminar with accommodation free of charge. Free transport may also be applied for.

(Although translators are not specifically mentioned, there is every reason to believe that specialists would be considered).

Applications may be filed through: http://www.salzburgseminar.org/2005AvailableSessions.cfm
