Looking at purchasing a word counting software and would like to hear opinions regarding what translators feel is the best or better word counting tool from the ones that are available today.

Reasons for differences among tools Sep 29, 2015

While I don't have a recommendation for a "best" word counting tool, I have done some research (and released an open source tool) into what causes differences in words counts between different tools.

Common word count gray areas include:
-Ellipses
-Hyperlinks
-Contractions
-Hyphenated Words
-Dates
-Numbers
-Numbered Lists
-XML and HTML tags
-Forward slash

-Hidden Text specific to Microsoft Word

For details on how common word count tools (Microsoft Word, Pages, wc(Unix)) handle these gray areas, please see these charts.

Count Anything Sep 30, 2015

I've been using Count Anything for years now. It's free, fast and easy to use. It accepts many file formats, doesn't miss anything and doesn't try to be smarter than Microsoft Word, the tool most of my clients use to check my counts.

http://ginstrom.com/CountAnything/

If counting with Count Anything isn't possible, I use SDL Trados Studio 2014.

Cheers,
Gerar
