Earlier this month I read with interest on the issue whether ProZ should be still called translators' workplace. I did not participate in the discussion but today when I was searching freelancers in English to Bengali pairs from Bangladesh in ProZ directory, I found a new name 'jutexporter' in this pair with a tag line: Bangladeshi Exporter of Jute Products. I was wondering how come jute exporters come to this 'translators' work place' with their name, slogan and even website. Is this a place for advertisement!!! How come ProZ allows this kind of 'users' to advertise about their product.

I would like to know the position of ProZ on this matter and comments from fellow translators.

Hello Lubain Nov 25, 2006

I have checked this issue. Everything was simple. They came a to ProZ.com page with a KudoZ question concerning textiles. But after registration no other activities has been noted. I have removed the profile as irrelevant.

However I would like to ask you to avoid posting such questions in the forums, especially with the links to profiles.
Please kindly edit out the links in your posting and in the future please write directly to any of the moderators or to the site staff.

what was the "crime" of the profile? Nov 25, 2006

It is legitimate for companies that are not translation companies to register. We should even welcome them here - because translators could start getting jobs directly from those companies instead of going through middlemanship. Also the fact that the registered user has so far only asked one question is not sufficient grounds for deletion of their profile; maybe the profile needed to be converted into an outsourcer profile? Or, maybe the jute company employs an internal translator?

Hi Valters Nov 25, 2006

No crime, of course. And we should even welcome them here - but as translation outsourcers. But they have registered at the site and created a profile presumably of a translation service provider which did not represent the facts.

Would they outsource some translation job they would be registered at the Blue Board as an outsourcer.

Deletion was necessary Nov 26, 2006

Thank you Natalie for deletion of the profile that is completely irrelevant in this site.

As per your instruction, I have deleted the objectionable portions.
But I feel that I needed to raise this topic in this forum to know the comments of the translators on this issue and to make them aware about such irrelevant postings.

And thanks Valters for your comment as I wanted such comments.

Actually, if the user was an outsourcer, I would not have objected but it registered as freelancer translator. But even then, Proz should not be used as a place for advertisement. The idea that the company has internal translator is not reasonable, as then that translator can get registered as freelancer. Furthermore, as a Bangladeshi, I can assure you that companies in Bangladesh do not employ such internal translator.

Hi,

I've noticed that people who are not necessarily translators or who don't work in professions related to translation register at ProZ.com to ask a question in the forums or in KudoZ.

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with it, but maybe there could be some separate type of registration or way of logging in for such people, whereby their "profiles" would automatically be removed or deleted about a week after they have asked their question, which would be enough t

Best regards,

What is the problem? Nov 26, 2006

Why is this whole thing bothersome? When and how did they cross anyone's path? Did they hijack a Proz member's jute business?

Occasional registration and questions from potential clients are much less hazardous than persistent participation of some registered "translators". Those who want to deceive would not register as jute exporters, they will appear as professionals with immaculate profiles, ten times more populated than mine, for example:-) At worst, it was some kind of honest

As far as people who are "not translators" and do not hide it - Welcome! Experts, writers, we need you! We might regard certain professional angles differently but we still need your knowledge.

Dear Moderator,

I am the person responsible for the Jutexporter profile. I was interested to join the the Forum after reading the word comments about "Sackleinen" (http://www.proz.com/kudoz/441364). It is actually same as "Sackcloth", because 100% linen cloth in the German word is actually coarse fabric.

Since this concerns my industry, I thought I could give more elaborate information with detailed history that can come from an industry specialist who has done extensive research on the keywords that they are related to.

I would like to catch your attention on one of my blog which I had worked for 1 year to collect what our products are called through out the world. The blog's location is http://exporter-of-jute-products.blogspot.com

I think the research is not my personal property, as it was done under the flag of my company. Therefore, I believe everything that relates the work of my company should be highlighted under my company, not with personal identity.

If you think that it was an offense to create account in the name of our company, then I'll gladly accept it.

P.S. This is my personal account, not my company's.

Thank you for the clarification - and welcome to ProZ.com!

I'll try to clarify what was the problem with your previous profile. You have registered at the site and created a profile presumably of a translation service provider (English to Bengali) which did not represent the facts. Moreover, your profile advertised the activity of your company which was irrelevant to ProZ.com directory as it had nothing to do with translations.
