My wife will be coming to Ohrid with me, but she'll be site seeing while I'm at the conference. She is interested in visiting the Sveti Naum monastery, and she's heard that July 3 is one of his feast days. Does anyone know if there will be any festivals going on that day? She's a religion professor, so she's interested in visiting local religious sites and would appreciate any recommendations.

Thanks!

Jason

Ohrid, Saint Naum Monastery: article Jun 19, 2009

Hello Jason.

Has your wife seen this. Sounds like there's bound to be a festival. (Ask around when you get there?)

Lesley

http://www.pontificalmission.org/mag-article-bodypg-pm.aspx?articleID=429 Para 3 ff. Over 1000 years ago Sveti Naum built a monastery and church overlooking Lake Ohrid. He was one of the “Great Enlighteners” of the Slavic nation ... On July 3, Sveti Naum is especially honored in this remote site. ... In Ohrid, a few miles to the north, many who cannot get to the ancient site celebrate the saint’s day in a small chapel next to Saint Clement’s Church. ...

Ohrid, Saint Naum Monastery Jun 21, 2009

Hi Jason,

The monastery is situated quite close to the hotel where the conference is going to be held. It is a festive day and many people visit the monastery on that day.

I hope you will get more info on Ohrid and that your wife will get the chance to visit as much as places as she can when you come over here.

In the meantime , I have found some interesting sites that might help you.

See you in Ohrid,

Maja

guide-books ...; Cyrillic; Ohrid mosques Jun 21, 2009

Hello again Jason

I guess you have access to guidebooks ... I don't know how much they say about the sites, but perhaps they might give you some leads.

Here is one with brief details on Ohrid and the Monastery:
Lonely Planet: http://www.lonelyplanet.com/macedonia/places

Ohrid: 'It was here that Sts Clement and Naum in the 9th century founded the first Slavic university.'
Sveti Naum: 'The beautiful 17th-century Church of Sveti Naum (admission 100MKD) rises on a hill above the lake ...

Others, such as Fodor's, etc, are sure to have some info, I would say.

Lesley

Wow. This site of Maja's is quite good. http://www.ohrid.com/sites.html
Ohrid Sites to Visit: Aside of the lake, Ohrid is most famous for its ancient churches, basilicas, and monasteries where Saints Kliment and Naum... wrote their teachings and formulated the Cyrillic alphabet ... @ Jason, does your wife read Cyrillic, I wonder ...

Maja's site:
http://ohridinfo.com/?osnovni=3&lg=en
Here's a list of Ohrid monasteries and churches ... and some photos.

There are also mosques:
http://eeuroperussiatravel.suite101.com/article.cfm/ohrid_and_its_lake
Monasteries, Mosques and Icons: With some 40 religious buildings -- both monasteries and mosques -- ...
Ali Pasha Mosque, Zeynel Abedin Mosque:
http://www.culture.org.mk/EALIPASDZAM.HTM Ali Pasha Mosque article
(underneath the mosque are mosaics from an older Christian church)

I am sure your wife will already have found some of this information ... (?)

1 This site (above) is a good one. It seems to be a Macedonian Ministry of Culture site. The same authors have written an article on the 9th Century cave churches, here:
www.soros.org.mk/konkurs/008 (1998, about the cave churches by the Ohrid Lake ... )

2 Synagogues: 'There was at least one synagogue in Ohrid, which survived intact into the nineteenth century.'(Google)

3 Another list, and an account of the city's history:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ohrid#Buildings_and_museums_.28selection.29
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ohrid
'Ohrid is notable for having once had 365 churches ... ‘

Lesley

PS Re: festivals in general, there is also, apparently, a summer music festival ... And the Lake is a World Heritage site, it seems ...

What about Saint Panteleimon monastery? Jun 27, 2009

Hi Jason,

I don't know to much about your choice but I've been told that the Saint Panteleimon monastery is the one to visit when in Ohrid. It is atrributed to Saint Clement of Ohrid, a.o.t. famous as the creator of the basics of the cyrillic alphabet.

See hhtp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Panteleimon_Ohrid
and
