What does "potential job" mean in the job system?

I am relatively new to proz. What "potential job" means that appears sometimes in job ads?

From what i understand it is a job ad that does not necessary leads to a job now, in the present, undertaken by the translator.

But maybe this is the case for the future. That sometime in the future the outsourcer will proceed and give the project to a translator.

Is there any other meaning to consider, besides the above(and obvious), regarding the "potential" feature?

Am i describing it correctly?

I always understand... Sep 9, 2010

...that the agency asking for quotations is preparing for the possibility that they get a job from the end customer. When an agency says "potential job" it means that they don't know whether they will have the job, and therefore cannot say they have a job.

A potential job definition Sep 9, 2010

Hello Dimitris and Tomás,

Thanks for your question.

A "potential" job is any job posted without defined scope and/or details; in particular, calls for CVs or similar general invitations to establish a business relationship.

Hope this explains. Please let me know if you have any doubts.

My bests,
Helen

A potential job may mean that if you send them your CV and it is a good one, then this agency may send it on (without your knowledge or permission, of course) to the end client to try to impress the end client with the qualifications of its translators.

Then if they get the job, they don't give it to you, they give it to some unqualified translator who charges peanuts.

Got the picture?

I was going to write the same, but I was afraid I might be forced to delete the messageicon_smile.gif
Another case is when the project managers need to fill their activity reports, so they "expand the database".

I would consider this a breech of confidentiality, of course.

Whilst I agree this surely happens with unscrupulous agencies, I'm not sure what your point is in relation to ProZ. If you're implying the category of "potential job" shouldn't be allowed, then I think this is a bit like saying "we should ban telephones because terrorists can use them to communicate".

There is a legitimate situation that arises where outsourcers need to get a list of potential collaborators on a job and their respective prices/availability before being able to commit to a particular price and deadline. I think the "potential job" category is fine.
