Hi,

"Games / Video Games / Gaming / Casino" is one of the work fields in my profile and every time I see a job posting in this field I have to read it in order to know if it's going to be something I'm an expert in (Video Games) or something I'm completely unfamiliar with (Gaming or Casino).
What I'm trying to say is that I can't see much similarity between translating for Video Games and translating for Gaming (or Casino) and I therefore suggest that the "Games / Video Games

What do you think about it?

Ciao,
Cristina

Is it really necessary? Oct 6, 2009

I see very few job postings and kudoz questions in this field (at least in my language pair), so it's not like we have a critical problem with hundreds of "false positives" which need better sorting.

While I do agree that video games and casino gaming are two completely different things, I don't see the necessity for such a change. We might as well also create another subdivision for board games then, which is yet another completely different field.

In a perfect world... Oct 6, 2009

we would indeed have "board games" as another field. However, this would be splitting hairs since board games are not nearly as significant (market share) as video games and gambling.

I would like to see this change implemented ASAP since I recently spent (i.e. wasted) time on a potential (at least that's what I thought) client, who looked at my profile and contacted me. Unfortunately, he ignored the content of my profile and thought I would be interested in casino/gambling translations since this is my special field...
I do appreciate getting requests via ProZ, however, I could think of better ways of spending my time than resolving these misunderstandings (playing games maybe?)...

I beg to differ. I am not short of work and I do see job posts in this field quite regularly.
I appreciate that to some this might not be a major issue but with the ever increasing significance of this market, I reckon a division into seperate fields is a valid request.

I totally agree with the topic starter. I work in RPG localization and it's very confusing to receive all these poker website translation requests.

Good initiative Oct 6, 2009

Count me in on that, please.
I am on the "gambling side of life" and it would make things so much easier.
Well, clients/job posters would have to watch out for the differentiation, too, though

From another recent thread... Oct 6, 2009

I found this in a rather recent thread (http://www.proz.com/forum/prozcom_suggestions/146552-genetics_field_of_expertise_is_useless.html)

Henry D wrote:

The list was created using an empirical, rather than an intellectual, approach. In other words, an item is in the list because people wrote it in when entering KudoZ questions. (And others are not in the list because they did not get entered.)

The exercise was carried out several years ago. Perhaps it is getting to be time to do another review.

So we are not alone and I think there are translators and interpreters across all fields who would like see some changes to the organsiation of the specialties. Let's see if we get a statement from site staff or Henry on this...

Since I appreciate that we can't have all possible specialties for each and every field, some quantitative factor (which expresses a field's relevance) needs to be considered when deciding which specialty to add (or delete). Something like the number of job posts maybe?

Any thoughts are appreciated.

I totally agree. I translate video games and manuals for gaming consoles, and I have absolutely no experience with online casinos, while I often receive offers to translate such sites.
