What about letting us "choose" our profile URL? Instead of a number?

Hi everyone,

Wouldn't it be nicer, communication-wise, if Proz profiles URLs actually looked something like www.proz.com/john-doe, rather than something like www.proz.com/profile/458963, which is totally impersonal and doesn't look quite professional on a visit card or anywhere else you may insert it?

You can! Jan 12, 2016

Well, at least you could back in the day ... www.proz.com/translator/maryworby takes you to my profile, but I have no idea how it works!

Great idea! As far as I can work out, my profile in "OWNER" view is

http://www.proz.com/translator/617634

Which is bad enough; but when I switch to "VISITOR" view, it becomes

http://www.proz.com/?sp=profile&eid_s=617634&sp_mode=profile&visitor=1

That is AWFUL !

Great :) Jan 12, 2016

Wow, thanks for the info, Mary

First time I see that.

Wouldn't it be even more professional-looking and "clean" if you could simply use proz.com/mary.worby?

I mean, Proz is sufficiently well-known in the industry now. Right?
No need to state "translator" or "interpreter".

If anyone can tell me where I may change this, it would be much appreciated !

Well indeed "http://www.proz.com/translator/maryworby" takes me to MY profile too when I'm logged in.

Hi Tom,

http://www.proz.com/?sp=profile&eid_s=617634&sp_mode=profile&visitor=1 is just the url needed for the system to display to you the way your profile will be seen by visitors, but it has no other meaning, as the visitors will see your profile at http://www.proz.com/translator/617634

Regards,
Enrique

And when I'm logged out, http://www.proz.com/translator/maryworby takes me to a page that says this profile doesn't exist anymore or there's no such profile.

You might want to know it if you use this URL somewhere , Mary.

But I don't actually use that link. I remember way back when, there was an option for how your profile URL was displayed, maybe I picked the link in my maiden name or something. I've been married 12 years, which shows you how long ago that was!

Or maybe I just dreamt it!

So... couldn't we create an alias for the visitor landing page? Jan 12, 2016

Pretty please

Facebook does it, Proz can do it too...

I've had since 2007 to remember the 6-digit number I've been assigned, but it still hasn't sunk in. I think I can just about remember my name though.

Thanks to Enrique for ....."clarifying" but as part of the much more wide-ranging revision of the whole Proz platform and its GUI for which some users have been pressing, I do think that a more "user-friendly" form of nomenclature for individual profiles would be welcome.

(Another improvement, BTW, would be a spellcheck/modify option for these discussion posts, and an *easy 21st-century* way to include images!)

Register your own domain Jan 12, 2016

You can just buy your own domain, and redirect it to your ProZ profile, if you don't want to set up another separate website.
Mine is this:
www.katalinmcclure.com
This way I have my email on my domain as well.
If you are a member, hosting at ProZ is free.
