The web references for KOG are rapidly disappearing.

Please cache them!

KOG? Feb 3, 2006

This warning probably does not concern me because I have to ask:
What is or are "KOG"? Lots of Google hits, but none the wiser...

Oh, yes... Feb 3, 2006

Please see http://www.proz.com/kog[/quote]

My mistake: I didn't notice which forum I was in (coming directly from the homepage). I was completely at loss about the context...

Blame it on my sinusitis, I just can't think straight today.
(Good thing I only have office work to do today *g*).

Thanks a lot for your explanations!

Antje

Can you explain, some of us are not "getting it".
What "web references"?
What do you mean "cash them"?
And what do you mean we're building our house on sand?
Who's "we"?

Dear Sylvie and Erik, Feb 3, 2006

What are “web references”? – Have a look at any KudoZ question an you will discover that ProZ.com kindly has provided space for two references, which preferably should remain available to us on the web. They start with http://www.

What is “caching” a web reference? - That means to copy the web page, which contains the reference, to another server (read a ProZ.com server) so that the content of the page remains available to those who search the KOG, even if the content of the original page has been changed or the original page has disappeared.

“We” are those who use the KOG, as Askers and/or Answerers.

The strength of the KOG is, in theory, that one can go back and view all answers provided to a term question and evaluate the quality of arguments and references. This is essential since the least qualified person, the Asker, decides what is right and should be entered in the KOG. Unfortunately many web pages change frequently, some even daily, and other disappears for various reasons, like lack of funds and/or traffic. The solution is caching by ProZ.com. Not to cache is “building the house (=the KOG) on sand”. Ref.: the Bible. “You” (in the heading) is our devine leader Henry.

All clear?

It is usually spelled cache... Feb 3, 2006

I think Sven means cache rather than cash.

Pronounced the same way - and it has only just dawned on me that it could be confusing!

I'm trying to do my invoicing for the last month, so I'm hoping for some of the other kind of cash...

Have a nice weekend!

Copyrights Feb 3, 2006

Hi Sven,

I believe this is a great idea however I suppose this content must be protected by copyright. Maybe there is some way around it but none that I can think of.

Dear Fred, Feb 3, 2006

Google is caching, so there must be a way around the problem.

Perhaps it could be done by screening out pages containing "©" and/or "copyright".

I wonder how much of this is true. Feb 3, 2006

But how did you find out? KOG is a community contribution, few or a lot of us a new to proz community and a few or many old members have worked it out to make a place of reference. That is how I understand it. Best Brandis

Possible solution Feb 3, 2006

Hi Swen,
One of the possible workarounds for this problem is Wayback Machine
Have you tried it?
It's an archive where you can find previous versions of webpages, by date. There is also a toolbar for easier access.
Great tool for finding things which have been lost in cyberspace

Well, they don't cache a lot (which is understandable, it takes huge amounts of storage space) and their index in often broken (although not as badly as Google's index), so the database thinks it has something but then cannot find and display it.
