I would be very happy to be verified, but due to the fact that I am short of money , and site admins and people in charge do not really know me personally at all,I would be very happy if either there would be a possibility of verification by SMS(a 1 € or 2€ SMS I can still afford),or if even non-proz.com members could verify the people who retain to be deserving verification.

I have an extremely wide range of non-prozians who would gladly verify me without paying even a penny only by clicking at an email link sent to them via email. And anyway, once the person is verified,it only serves the purpose that one is not a fantom registrartion, nothing else. And if one was verified him or herself, not by an external so to say 3rd person, then he or she is definitely existing, and exactly that is what ID verification is for.I expect opinions, especially that of site admins.

I repeat:I am rather poor(300 euro/month),and I can't really afford the huge prices of the site, given either in euro or in dollar, especially due to the fact taht when changing,I would really loose a huge amount of money at the exchange.

I think we have quite many eastern colleagues, who are not happy to pay the western-tailormade fees of the site.

Hi Gábor Jul 22, 2006

You don't need to pay huge amounts to get VIDed; there is no need to become a paid member with this purpose.

There are two other ways of getting VIDed:

-- You can pay $5 USD using a credit card that matches the name in your profile.

-- You can meet in person a ProZ.com member who has the authority to verify identities and and get VIDed by him/her; this does not cost anything. Consider attending a powwow.

Please see the application form here:
http://www.proz.com/?sp=vid_application

P.S. By the way, a ProZ.com conference is planned in Budapest in spring 2007, http://www.proz.com/powwow/859
but I am sure there will be some powwow sooner than that.

I think you made a point.
And I do sympathize with you.

Is it necessary? Jul 23, 2006

I personally don't see any point in being VIDed. So you have a credit card that matches your profile name or someone has met you in the flesh and attested to who you are? What difference to your marketability does that make?

I'm not even sure how the $5 credit card verification works. Does Proz refund the $5 after your card has been verified or do they keep it? If they keep I think that's rather scandalous. Your name against your credit card can be verified for as little as one or two cents so $5....come on!

Anyway, so you get verified, then what? Are you a better translator because of it? Do you always meet deadlines because of it? Can you be that much more relied upon because of it? I don't think so.

Your work should speak for itself and sell itself. Do a very short test, supply references from highly satisfied clients.

You do not need ID verification in this business.

On a side note, isn't the economy in Hungary lower in comparison to other european countries? If you're charging even normal average western rates then that alone should give you a decent income in Hungary. As an example the US & the UK can afford to pay top rates so try and target agencies or direct clients in those countries and then you will see your income soar:)

You made the point about many eastern colleagues not being happy with the fees of western sites. Just turn the tables and charge the west as much as you can:)

Good luck and best wishes,
Mark

ID verification is important Jul 23, 2006

Can't agree with the last post. ID verification is very important to me when in evaluating blue board entries; because non-verified IDs are high risk for being fraudulent I basically discount them unless the user is otherwise very active on proz (and hence seems likely to be a genuine person, not just an alias created to boost BB ratings.)

ID verification through passport Jul 23, 2006

I agree that ID verification is important but the process of ID verification does not suit for all. One method is paying by credit card but here in Bangladesh you cannot avail of an International Credit Card, so even if I become member, my ID cannot be verified. I do not know any one in Bangladesh who can verify my ID and without ID you cannot even organise a powww and I do not know has anyone ever organised powwws in Bangladesh.

I propose ID verification by passport/national ID, whose attested photocopy can be sent to proz office.

Any comment or suggestion?

Gábor, I agree! Jul 23, 2006

In my case, it's a matter of psychological comfort as much as anything. I'm quite active on Proz. in my language pairs and I enjoy the interaction with my colleagues (hope that it's mutual!) However, all the time in the background there lurks the question - am I really who I say I am, or am I an 'imposter'. It would indeed be nice to know that everyone knows that I'm me!

What's more, although I'm fairly active - hopefully in a sane and sensible way - by being unverified, on 'paper' at least, I feel as if I am almost on a par with users who, for example have asked over 240 questions and answered none and whose profile page contains no information whatsoever, not even fields of expertise.

Natalia wrote that there are two ways of getting VIDed:

1. Via a credit card payment.

Well, as Iffat wrote, this isn't necessarily an option for everyone. Furthermore, how about the far-from-uncommon situation where someone may choose to use one name in their everyday lives but has a different name on their official documents because of the excessive cost of changing those documents?

2. You can meet in person a ProZ.com member who has the authority to verify identities and and get VIDed by him/her; this does not cost anything. Consider attending a powwow.

Yes, we may. However, for some people, the cost of travel and, possibly, overnight accommodation may be prohibitive and for many people, personal committments may mean that this isn't really viable. What's more, as Iffat points out, we can't even arrange a powwow. Anyway, is there any guarantee that a member who has the authority to verify identities will be there?

Is there no way of arranging for a certain level of activity to lead to verification? For example, Browniz are "points earned by contributing something to the community or the site". So, once a user has contributed a certain amount to the community/site, could not a certain number of Browniz lead to verification, along with a profile with a 'completeness rate' of, say, at least 15 out of 34 (not everyone can afford the software, not everyone needs to give voice and/or video samples and some options are only open to platinum members anyway)?

I know that here are some language pairs with far fewer questions than others, which is why I"m not suggesting Kudoz. However, since Browniz can be earned by other means apart from answering questions, this might be a realistic suggestion. After all, would the 'imposters' really take the time and trouble to earn those points by creating glossary entries, writing articles etc. etc.?

Thanks for raising the topic, Gábor - and, by the way, I believe that you're there!!!

Cheap for you, dear for Proz? Jul 24, 2006

Sending an SMS may be cheap for you, but it may be expensive for Proz.com to set it up. I don't know what the situation is in the country that Proz.com is operating from, but in ZA (my own country), setting up an SMS system is extremely expensive and only really an option if you expect to get many thousands of SMSs over a short period of time.

Verification by fax Jul 24, 2006

Natalie wrote:

Not everybody is willing or able to pay $5 just to prove his identity. OK, maybe I could afford it, but I don't think I would like to spend $5 just to prove that I am who I am.

If you live "at the back of beyond", you may find it difficult to meet a ProZ.com member who is authorized to verify other ProZ.com members or users. Therefore, I think it would be a good idea if it were possible to prove your identity by simply sending a fax. This option could be made possible for those users who have, say, 2000 BrowniZ or a couple of KudoZ points. All in all, I do think Gábor's suggestions should be taken into consideration.

Policy on identity verification Jul 24, 2006

You may review out program of identity verification at http://www.proz.com/faq/qa

As said above, your identity can be verified by meeting in person a site member who has been authorized by site staff to verify identities or by making a payment with a credit card issued in your name (it maybe a membership or a one-time non-refundable $5 payment).

Powwows offer a great opportunity for ID verification. All it takes is a site member (or user with verified identity) to organize the event, and then we can arrange the permissions to have someone there authorized to verify identities.

Regards,
Enrique

Hi Enrique,

Do all platinum members automatically become ID verified? If not how does that work?

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

No, it is not automatic, but if you paid with a credit card with your name on it you can send a request from the page http://www.proz.com/?sp=vid_application

In this case you should select the first option and indicate the way and date of payment, from this point it should work on its own.

Regards,
Enrique

Finding out who can verify IDs Sep 22, 2006

How can I know whether a Proz member is authorized to verify ID, short of directly asking him/her? Is there a list of their names somewhere in the website o does it say so in their profiles?

Thanks
