Not sure if more people would think or wish likewise, please say so if you do. I would like to ask ProZ to do this:

Regarding the fields of specialisation for our profile, would it be please possible to make "Advertising" and "PR" two different and independent categories. It would be good to be able to choose just one of them.

PR stands for a generic term. Advertising is just a small but crucial part of a PR campaign, which can include anything, e.g. press releases, performances and whatever a good PR manager can think of...

I do not question the validity of your request but I think it really don't matter. The people coming to you with a PR problem do not know the difference between PR and Ad. On employment websites PR is always in the same category with ad. To look even more closer, a lot of people do not know the difference between Marketing, Advertisement, PR and Communication. Only the practitioners of those job really care. As a Market Research Analyst I've being dealing with the same situation for so many ye... See more

The fact that advertising is often used in a PR campaign, doesn't mean that advertising is a subset of PR. After all, the PR person might also do word processing, he might use the telephone, he will certainly drive to places, etc... but that doesn't make WP, telecoms and transport subsets of PR.

Ditto marketing... some people seem to think that advertising and marketing are somehow intertwined -- they are related in that they have the same ultimate end-goal, but they involve completely different things.

Marketing texts (eg. brochures) may be however less "flowery" than press releases and less condensed than ads. Then, there are as well different kinds of ads, aren't they? The easy to translated ones (I think), that is, very short ones like "banners", and the very condensed ones of a considerable size, which require a lot of experience to translate.

I must have translated at least 300 press releases (between press releases and editorials, which, in my case, was pretty much the same), and yet, I do not feel I could translate a full page ad without taking a course first. This is why I would like to be able to choose PR only, without having to say I can translate an ad, which would not be true.

You are perfectly right though in saying that both normally come from the same departmental source. Maybe ProZ could make a subsection within PR, so you can opt out of Advertising.

I don't know, the difference between a translator with experience in press releases and one with experience in ads, might be like the difference between a novel writer and a poet...

About this, sorry for confusing some of you. I guess my text might have not been very clear and I must have given the impression I did not know what PR stood for. Of course I did (everybody does), I just did not think that I had to clarify things because the initial letters of "press release" happen to match "PR".

I agree with you too. Having PR experience does not mean you can necessarily translate PR, whatever type of PR it is. The different fields in PR and marketing are very much disconnected and having experience in one, does not mean you can translate all sorts of texts coming from marketing and PR departments.

The ITI places "marketing", "public relations" and "advertising" as three independent areas of the Business section (you can see this if you look for members and see the options to select).
